In Chrysler applications it was a A833 in GM it was NP833, essentially the same transmission, from what I understand it is a Legendary Mopar transmission. My truck was a factory 305 with an NP833 behind it. I was happy with it, I plan on rebuilding it prior to reinstalling it during my restoration
It's actually a New Process transmission and why GM used NP833. Dodge also used called it NP440.

No. A833-OD was a Chrysler transmission for cars and trucks.

In only 82-83 they were put into CHEVY Trucks with the 6.2L Diesel engine Or Gasoline... there's only Supposeaably 200 ever made. Limited run I have Very close Older friends hell 20-30 yrs than me who's mentioned they've only seen 1-5 within the last 20-25 years with that Engine/Trans Combo. They are the Holy Grail to us 6.2/6.5L Guys.
Except for the ones that were put into the '84, '85, and '86 trucks.

Here's my '87, which I ordered new and followed down the assembly line as it was built.

4.3L V6, A833 trans, 3.73 gears. Over 200,000 miles and 30 years as a daily driver.

Still shifts smooth and easy like new, with a satisfying "click" going from second to third.

Looking at this ‘83 C20 in Texas for $1200, not running. They say it has a 6.2/NP833 manual in it. I’d like to get one with this gearbox setup, and the 6.2 would be reliable or I could put my 305 in it. Does this sound like a reasonable combo, or are they pulling my lariat? This transmission is not common which begs my suspicion. I’d prefer this over an SM465 so it wouldn’t be the equivalent of a Model T Ford on the interstate or larger highways. @yevgenievich this isn’t too far from you, huh?

i have a 1982 c10 305 4 barrel ,miles unknown with a a833 , some rust , started it up skips, havent had time to see why? it does? pull forward , not sure about other gears, recent clutch and pressure plate , no ac cab, ps /pb, needs driver window, needs a new instrument cluster some put a diesel cluster in it ?

I’d make sure you’ve got good spark on all cylinders, and that all the wires are plugged in properly. If it’s sat for any period in the past 25 years, the carb may need a rebuild from the ethanol. It also wouldn’t hurt to check your fuel filter. I was gonna see if you were interested in selling it, but I live on the Gulf Coast, I’m looking at jobs here, West Florida and Texas, and I think I’d die without air conditioning on some of the days we have down here.

I didn’t know yours was a A833; I assumed it was a 700R4 or even a TH400 for some reason. That was also a legit pairing that year, huh? I always thought it was so neat how you followed that truck and still have it. I know if I was ever in your position, I would have done something similar.

As time goes on, I want the truck more. Mostly for the transmission. What does the swap to one of these entail? I seem to remember a thread from a long time ago that said these are pretty rare. At least with the GM pattern, maybe not so much for Chrysler. Is that about right? Would it be easier to start with an SM465 truck?

‘85 was the first year. The trucks got it carbed for the first two production years, but it started out as TBI in the cars that got them that year.

In most trucks and G-vans, yes. I think 454 P-vans had carburetors until 1989. B and G Body cars had a slower phase in. The last year you could get a Quadrajet on anything GM was the 1990 Olds Custom Cruiser with a 307. Corvettes and F Bodies started getting crossfire TBI in 1982, but that didn’t last long before they moved to TPI.
