Hi all,
Looking for some help deciding which direction to go with my 83 c10. This past weekend I lost 3rd gear in my auto transmission.
The truck has 250 inline six with the integrated head, and what I believe to be the th200 auto trans. The trans has always been a little weak when going from 2nd to 3rd, so the loss of 3rd gear is not all that surprising. The trans has had regular maintenance up to this point, and the fluid levels are good etc.
The 250 has always been a good motor, but it has always had a slight miss. An attempt to diagnose this was made on another thread on the forum, but really I think the engine may have a weak lifter, or the integrated intake on the head has some hairline crack, that I am not able to see with it on the engine etc. There has always been a tapping noise, sounding like it is coming from the valve train. It seems to quite a little bit once the engine is up to temp etc. In any case, I have been driving the truck like this for a year daily with no ill effect.
I also have a 350 sbc on the stand from a 93 suburban that needs to be rebuilt. I would to rebuild and put in the truck.
So here is my question: how easy is it to throw a 350 in the truck? What modifications would this require? I assume it wouldn't be too hard since these trucks came with 350s. Would it cost much more to swap the 350 in?
I ask this question now about the 350, because I figure I may need to switch the th200 out for a th350.
Also, I could dive into the six and see what the issue is, and put a new head (non-integrated) on it correct? In this case I would just replace the th200 with a rebuilt unit.
Additionally, I do work part time at an auto parts store and could get a good deal on a reman 350 (1300), a reman head for the six (225) and a reman th200 for 850.
Sorry to be so long winded folks, but I was hoping to give you all the full picture in the hope that a 350 into the truck could be a real option.
