Well since the 265/75 require at least a 7" wheel and I am staying with the factory 6.5" gona stay with the 235/85.
Done and done.
Thanks for all the input, it was helpful.

The 265 tire is a good "real world" match in this case. There's not really a good strong 235/85 tire anymore, all the ones I ran across at the time had floppy sidewalls and incredibly narrow (even for a 235) tread width. The 265 size is still very common and there are a lot of options to pick though. A lot of folks even run 285's on the 6.5 wide rims without trouble at all.

If you ever what a real world look at tire width and that it really doesnt matter what the tire says, go look at Nitto Drag Radials. Their 275 is just as wide as a 315. Beats me on why its that way and it doesnt make sense. Just know that because they say its a width, doesnt actually mean its that wide.

I ran 285/75R16's on a 2001 GMC 2500 HD CC with the same rims pictured on my '85. I didn't like the fact I had to run such a narrow rim, but I did want to hack the fender/bumper on that truck. I kept the front tires at 65 LBS at all times (it had an 8.1L) and unloaded I kept the rear at 40-45 LBS. The only time I ever noticed the sidewalls squirming was when I towed my 30 travel trailer. I then would change the rear pressure to 65-70 LBS. Due to the fact they were 10 ply tires, when full aired up, I never noticed any sway.

Thanks for all the replies.
Once I learned I have 6.5" wheels not 7" like the tire store guy said I have it was a no brainer for me. The 265's were too wide for the wheel and the 245"s where going to be a little shorter than the 235/85's.
So 235/85 16's . Done and done.

Those look like a good tire, with square shoulders and a flat contact patch.
