I know I post this last year. But I have still not fixed this problem.

1. new wires
2. new spark plugs
3. new cap and rotor
4. New coil
5. new ignition module
6. replace dizzy with a good working GM 1
7. new alternator

Just about everything needed. Yes I used the paste so the module would not heat up, and yes I cleaned all the old paste off before I put the new paste.

After all this new stuff, 2 min, later it blew the module again. GROUNDS ARE GOOD AND CLEAN ..

Will a MSD box with a external coil make this NIGHTMARE go away???
I am really lost what to do here.

The only other thing I can think of is the ignition box on the steering column. Could those go bad or create a short to blow out the modules??
engine is a 5.7 auto.

Help me get up to speed. Is it a standard HEI or does the truck have an ECM and ESC for the spark?

During an engine swap I threw in the dizzy that came with the motor, which required the other connector...goes to the ecm or whatever it's called. That dizzy only lasted a few days. That explains why the original dizzy didn't have it. I'm guessing it was bad and that's why the previous owner put one in that didn't require it.

I'd get a used dizzy or a new one, that doesn't require the ECM. GM original or one from Skip White/Ebay. The latter you can get for ~$50 new. There's also a few post's about the latter as well. I'm happy with mine.

No TACH, but there is a plug there plugged in. I tried it with it unplugged and the ICM still blew seconds after start up!! :angels2:

Is the little metal ground strap under the coil present?
What brand modules are you using?

I know what you mean. Sad thing is, Nothing has been modified or added since all this crap started happening.:Insane:

I called MSD today and they said the MSD 6AL box would cure the problem. I dont see how!

This may have been covered already but. The distributer gets its ground through the base correct? Is that a solid ground? Does the engine have a solid ground? It's almost like the module is carrying the load fore somthing else. What if you run a temporary dedicated ground from the battery to the distributer just to rule it out?

Ok, stupid question. How would I run the ground wire? Where do I mount on the Dizzy? thanks

I was thinking you could simply clean a spot on the stem of the housing and stick the wire under a hose clamp. Anything that makes a good clean contact. Then tap a good ground off the battery.
Heck even a jumper cable coild work just to rule out grounding.
