89Suburbsn - tomorrow I will go get some nice large gauge wire and rewire the alernator the way you suggest. I will also replace the negative wire of the battery with a beefier one. Again, thanks to everybody for all the help.

I removed a ton of rotten insulation material from under the carpet... Do you know where I can buy some to replace it? What do you even call that stuff??

A lot of folks use a more modern material called HushMat http://hushmat.com/?gclid=COafktn6y8ICFataMgod10EAtw

There are several other types/brands of products on the market.

P.S... glad you found a temporary fix for the electrical problem. Don't leave it temporary for too long

The carpet underlay material is called "jute".

If you plan on stripping all the old stuff out, it would be wise to try to salvage the catalytic converter insulation pads - white material in clear plastic bags - if you have them.
