I gotcha on the shaft. I will get the pan dropped tomorrow and go from there. Just trying to get a parts list together to see how much this is all going to cost me.

Shop around. I used Rock Autio for 90% of my stuff as with their shipping it was still cheaper than what most of the places around where I live would have been.

Not completely flat, but it's pretty bad. The timing chain didn't jump, but it was so loose that I could almost take it off the gears. Stretched all to ****.

A lot of these mud run guys around here are running the "corvette cam". Idk what they are talking about, but they keep telling me to check it out. Comp recommended the cl12-230-2 to me today. Anybody else running this?

I'll voice my opinion based off what another member says.. 12-300-4 if you want a torquey cam. It goes from idle to 4500rpm .. which is perfect for a truck and yes that cam looks rough.

Oh and I looked at the specs of the old cam ...
Basic RPM Range: 2200-5400
Manufacturers Description: Rough idle, Street/Strip, 2800+ stall.

That cam had no chance LOL. Not in a truck anyways.

I probably should. I have this lingering fear that I have a valve stuck shut. Part of me wants to stick the cam and lifters in and truck on, and the other part of me wants to pull the motor out and do it right. Plus it would be nice to clean it up and paint it.

Its funny your pretty much trucking down the exact same road I went down 3 months ago. One thing leads to another and leads to another. Next thing you know you have the entire top end off and your replacing 90% of the parts.

I saved a ton of cash because I found a used set of heads that were just recently cleaned up for $150 that came with head bolts and a gasket set.

Don't be fooled into think it'll cost only $150 for the heads to be cleaned eitherr. When the heads are fluxed you may find they are cracked or junk and you need to find replacements. Its a lot of work involved and parts involved to re/re a set of heads and sometimes its best to keep an eye out for a good working used set that have just been cleaned up.

I would at l last do the heads because the pistons show to have good compression. I bet that cam made those valves"float" and springs bind. Let me check out that cam.

It's just like when I remodeled my house earlier this year. "Since we're putting in new tile, we might as well get new cabinets built and new counter tops and all new appliances and light fixtures and hell lets do the whole house while we're at it.
