So what's the best way to do it and what should I be on the look out for?

Set up a dial indicator and see what she's got! Greater than 0.012" you should probably tighten it up a little, but no tighter than 0.005". With the spanner nuts on either side of the carrier backlash is easy to adjust.

Depends more on mileage than years. A dial indicator would tell you for sure. The carrier spanner nuts have these wire holders that hook in holes in the spanners, you could probably just loosen one side to the next set of holes and tighten the other side to the next set of holes and bring it in. IF it is indeed out. NEVER go by eye or ear on something like that, too tight is just as bad as too loose.

Take pics, I want to see the condition of the ring gear teeth! If the backlash has been loose for a while the teeth's edge will get knifed down, you should have 1/8" of flat edge on the teeth instead of a sharp edge.

Oh **** yeah, that ring gear looks great. No shrapnel in the gear oil or bottom of the housing? I'll be at the races all day tomorrow so it may be late tomorrow evening before I can check back on your findings/progress.
