383 stroker crank from summit or jegs about same 2-300 you will pay for that 400 pile, and you will be way better off too. Sorry to sound negative at your parade, but is true.

@Big Heavy they're like 600 lol, and I don't trust myself to cut up my block for clearance and 600+ a machine shop for striker mods and standard stuff, way out of my league

How about this for a $2,600, 373 horsepower, fast-swap alternative that will get your truck on the road quickly, You will need a Vortec intake, but almost everything else from the old engine will swap right over. And when you get done you will have Vortec heads and a roller cam - not a bad combination.

It may not be as much fun as picking out all the parts yourself, but I would expect the cost to be very close to what you will have in by the time you buy another engine and pay for all the machine shop work.

An LF6 400 was a big block.

We were talking about small block 400s, not bored out 396s...

For the love of Google and all that is searchable....

LF6 or LF-6 is the 1970-72 small block 400, 2bbl engine

LS6 or LS-6 is the 454 BBC and later an Ls engine

Save your money enjoy your truck and when You have the cash stored to build an engine then search and decide what you want a few hundred might get you the proper machine work.

My advice is for you to buy an 880 number block so it is provisioned for hyd. roller cams, still has fuel pump bosses. This will be a good foundation for you to build an engine on whether it be a stock 350 with more power or a 383. This block will also accept the heads on your current engine when the time comes but, i recommend a different set heads new vortecs $600 ish.

on a budget, a new flat tappet cam, used vortec heads, and new or used vortec intake would really wake up that 350. that could be done on a weekend assuming the bottom end is sound. a roller cam set up is going to be pricey ($800)?

Anyone know good part numbers for the vortecs assuming I keep a 350? All i would do to them is a home valve lap job

Bad part about that is Vortec heads are probably new to cracking do to a thin deck surface. They should be checked for cracks and rear f your gonna pull them at a yard take a small propane torch with you to check them.

12558062. They'll have a "sawtooth" 3 points cast into the front of the head. They're referred to as "062's" and there are also "906's" which were the earlier Vortecs with a notch cast into the front of the heads. I've heard the 906's don't have the 3 angle valve grind from the factory and rumored to be more likely to crack but they're the same casting so I don't believe it. When they crack they usually split between the cylinders or between the valves. This is one of my 906's...
