sounds like the starter solenoid to me, i had the same problem. i modified my solenoid and added a ford solenoid to the firewall, starts every time now.

Probably not a necessary mod but I am interested in what you did. For the most part the Delco starters were really reliable in stock form.

I think that I can confirm it is the starter/solenoid. This morning when I tried to crank it, I heard something that sounded like a motor working, but the actual starter didn't engage. Worked on the second try. Hoping that this is the problem.

Yep sounds like the starter. If it's the original unit I'd try to get a rebuild kit and got that route. Cheaper and the old starters are better quality.
