In my jeep gear there was a seal then a spacer and another seal further up in the pitman shaft and that was the one that was leaking.

I think so, Andy. I remember hearing you could take the snapring off, start the truck and cut the wheel and the seal would pop out but I wasn't brave enough to try it.

So, let's see if I'm getting this. There is an outer seal, as well as another pair of seals under the snap ring and washer? Three seals total?

No, there is two seals with a washer and snap ring on the outside.
