I was thinking the same thing but on my 84 4x4 Silverado I just ditched them because I've seen some trucks that don't have the mointi g holes at all so I figure if one can do without it so can mine

Those are sound insulation that came on the upper trim levels.
Not required for sure but I don't know how much they help to keep noise out of the cab.
