Could banging on a harmonic balancer cause the crankshaft to start rubbing on the flywheel cover?

I hired a guy to help work on the truck. Asked him to NOT bang it on. When I returned with the (free) balancer installation tool, he said it was "all set."

When we fired up the truck, squeaking sound, rubbing immediately. Coincidence? See pics plz.

Suppose it is possible to hammer out the thrust bearing. Way to check, using a pry bar try to move crankshaft both to the front then rear. Shouldn't move more than a few thousands of an inch.
