It's winter and it's cold and whenever I turn the fan on in my 1985 chevy c20 it makes a sound like it has a loose belt and just squeals. It works on high but sometimes squeals. Any other option it just squeals and nothing happens. I assume I need a new blower motor, but where should I get one and how much will it be. Any help?

The first thing I'd look at is the blower motor resistor. It's bolted in by two screws on the evaporator housing, and it's got a plug on it. You'll know if it's bad because the resistor coils will be damaged. It sounds like your blower motor may be on the way out, though. The motor bearing could be about to go, and your brushes may be bad, too. There are ways to clean it and lubricate it, and you could look those up and proceed to follow those procedures, but even then, you'd just be staving off the inevitable. If it were me, I'd just go ahead and replace it.

I purchased my new blower / heater fan motor from my local Autozone. $35 I thought that it needed replaced, but it didn't. Now I have an extra fan sitting on my parts shelf.

Thanks for the help.

It's either the motor bearings or the blower wheel is slipping. Pull it out and see if the wheel is tight to the shaft. If it is then it's the bearings.
