Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

Update to the continued cross-over steering saga, lol. I finished drilling out the knuckles, inserting the corrective bushings, and installing the track bar. With that done, I installed the cross-over bar and put the rest of the Burb back together. I had to spend a reasonable amount of time...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

eBay, there were a few on there, it might not be what I need (it says it is), but I could not figure anything else out. I got a 20-tooth because when I counted what I had in my Burb, it was 20. I am sure the ratio will still be off, but I plan on putting a GPS sending unit in at some point...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

Will do. The steering shaft was relatively easy once I had the correct u joint for my steering column. Blue Loctite is a must to be sure. I ordered a replacement Speedo Gear last night as I was also at a loss. Had to get a used one but it has the end on it which mines seems to be missing. We...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

You can pick whether you want to put the track bar on top or under the knuckle and I had read that if it is on top it is more stable and gives you more ground clearance so that’s what I pick. When I went to put the track bar on, because I had to install top down for whatever reason with my Burb...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

Spent hours today drilling out the Reid racing knuckles with a 7/8 drill bit so I can flip the track bar and finally get this boy back together. I went through one Dewalt 1/2 hammer drill already. This is no easy job.

If I could bother everyone for some additional advice. You may recall I have also been trying to fix my speedometer. I took what I think is the speedo gear out however it does not look like I thought it would. I have some pics attached. I was expecting to see a plastic gear in there and this...

    Meet my Suburban

WOW looks great. I bought a 79 Burb a few months back and have begun to try to “restore” it with the very little knowledge I have. Rebuilding a dif is something I am not sure I will ever be brave enough to tackle. In the middle of adding a cross over steering system and that has proven to be...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

Good morning. Just a quick update to the above. The new u joint from Summit was delivered on Friday. I was able to install it yesterday and at this point, it all looks good. Pics attached. I am still waiting on the correcting bushings from Offroad Design (it was not their fault UPS delivered...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

That is what I am hoping for. My Burb is on 35s with a 4 inch lift and honestly was really hard to keep in the lane at 65 mph. I will have the crossover steering kit, quick ratio steering box and this steering shaft all installed hopefully this weekend so I’ll let you know if it worked as I hoped.

The only other question I have is the number of splines. It looks like the 1 inch only comes in 48 spline so I am hoping that is correct.

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

Will do. I bought the GM version from summit. I am almost positive that the steering column had been replaced previously. The original invoice definitely says it has a tilt steering wheel but this one definitely does not tilt. So it may be that when whoever replaced it did the work they put some...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

On another note I have a problem with my replacement steering shaft. The supplied end of the steering shaft is double D shaped but the end coming off the steering column is round. Have any of you run into this issue. I’ll post some pics of what I’m talking about in a few minutes. I have to go...

So in the ever continuing saga of what can I unintentionally do wrong with this project. I have gotten both Reid knuckles, axel shafts, wheel locks replaced and hubs reinstalled. Yesterday I removed and installed the new steering box and at that point was all ready to put the tie rod back on...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

Ha, I am not sure I will ever tackle a major rebuild. I think I am doing more of the "Glamour" work. I can't see myself ever having the courage to do engine or transmission work, but I guess who knows? I don't think I would have ever thought I would be pulling the front-end steering system...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

This poor boy did not get much love over the last decade or so but truthfully that is a big part of what makes this so rewarding a project. I want to try to do this right so that as we take care of it going forward it will be in the family for a LONG time.

You are so right. I was telling my wife everytime I think i have figured something out and I move on with confidence undoubtedly within a few steps I run into the next problem. All the things I learned from doing the passenger side first I did not have to use when I was doing the drivers side...
