700R4 Lockup Torque converter control issues solved

This info is good stuff as I am not exactly thrilled about the thought of having trans problems any time soon. I've come across documentation that indicated that the "oil passage" issue only existed in early years of the 700r4, so this could be where the variables in discussion lie. If I were...

700R4 Lockup Torque converter control issues solved

But what is "excessive" ? 240 is generally maxed out, 225 is often mentioned as in the normal range. When I asked the local shop about my issue, they told me temps would not rise enough to actually matter, of course, they tend to like repairing transmissions for big $$$. I do not have a gauge...

700R4 Lockup Torque converter control issues solved

    >>> You may have already read somewhere that if the lockup isn't working, the trans can fail. And, we have heard from trans repair guys that this is untrue. I believe it to be untrue as well. If it never locks up, it just operates like any other torque converter trans with no lockup. I fought...

    Steering column help

This last summer, I helped my neighbor with his '71 column. Non-Tilt, but top had a ton of annoying play in every direction imaginable. He ordered a new top bearing, which I think is the same exact part number as my '83. The new bearing was really a sloppy piece of garbage, and I mean just as...

    Play in Steering Wheel

For what it is worth, My neighbors 1971 C20 had massive slop in the steering shaft. I figured it was a combination of the obvious sloppy top and bottom because it was so bad. I told him to purchase a new top bearing before we tore the whole thing down (I think he ordered the new one from LMC)...

What have you done to your square lately??

I dumped my late model Express for this truck. DONE with sensors and other BS. It has been skinned in Fiberglass mat and Resin. Most of the shape was there, I just added the missing areas.

What have you done to your square lately??

"Lately"... well, starting in mid June, until its first trip today, I built my "SB Sleepercell" camper, specifically to fit my Square. I took two 1980's era High top caps, sliced, diced and added a few other enhancements to get where it is. The "cap" is a full tub camper now, 15" higher and 12"...

Anyone ever seen a sun roof in a Square body

CR Laurence was a big supplier.... I worked in the Auto Accessories install market and we sawed an awful of of holes in cars/Trucks back in the day. Squarebodies were an uglier project because of the double roof tin. We did them anyhow... whatever the Car dealers wanted! Really creeps me out...

Wanting to add factory power locks

Well, you can..... Like others said, find a donor harness and all the parts. But frankly, you really gotta ask if it is worth the effort ? The wiring is usually combined with the power windows, so you have to separate that. Then you have to have the holes in the door panels and the OEM...

whats every body using.. looking for a new stereo head unit

FOSI BL20A - About $70 on Amazon. Small powerhouse. I have a zillion MP3's and I prefer that over anything they are playing on FM these days. The Fosi jams real nice with (2) 6x9's in the rear corners, and some 3.5"er's in dash capped off as tweeters. Has a Remote, Allows Bluetooth or direct...

    Keyless entry upgrade

I know what you mean. The OE rods are a larger diameter than what the clamps are made for. I removed the OE rods, thinned them out with the grinder in the area the clamps are installed. There was no way the clamps would work properly without doing that.

    Keyless entry upgrade

Ugh.. You never know what you run into with anything that had a computer. Probably throw a code if a wire is broke ! It also might need all the other circuits the body control module operated before a single function would work. Sorry I'm no help. I cheated and just bought a $25 Amazon 4 Door...

    Your preferred leather conditioner

Bought some leather seats out of a boneyard that were hard as a rock. I used Fluid Film. Stuff doesn't hurt anything else I figured. Worked every bit as good as anything else I ever purchased, so now I use Fluid Film on all sorts of stuff. Waterproofs my leather work boots real well...

    Odd Cooling System issue

You know what my Dad told me once ? If you really want to know whats going on with a thermostat, you absolutely must put it in a pot of water on the kitchen stove with a thermometer in the water. Watching it carefully, when you see it open, note the temp on the thermometer. And with the quality...

Fuel Gauge Tank Selector switch and valve

I went to look at pictures of one over at Rock Auto It's anyone's guess whether you can knock the rivets out, open it up and get it back together. I know I would crack an old one open if I was replacing it just to see inside. That's kind of my nature. It's not priced bad at Rock.... if it is...

Fuel Gauge Tank Selector switch and valve

If your Ohms are different at the firewall, then crawl under the truck and pull the plug on the valve and check them there. Maybe you just have corrosion outside the valve itself... in the plug connections. If I ever had to change my valve out, I would knock the original apart just so I could...

2.73:1 Rear - Do I have a chance in hell to......

Well, I've seen people make that statement that if it doesn't lock, the trans will overheat... But I didn't really believe that... All trans prior to lockups didn't "overheat". But if this was because early 700r4's were questionable, well, I believe they were, but lack of lockup is not what...

2.73:1 Rear - Do I have a chance in hell to......

So, yes, I have the 2.73:1 Rear ratio, 305 and a 700r4. 65 mph in 3rd without the lockup turns under 2000rpm. Is there a chance I will be able to pull my 3000lb 6x12 converted Cargo Trailer, or should I already be seeking a better axle option ? Seems I can find a used rear axle affordably, but...

Fuel Gauge Tank Selector switch and valve

Do you get the 87 Ohms directly at the sending unit itself ? If so, check what it is at the wire right where it goes thru the firewall. If it is not the same 87 ohm's or thereabouts, then yes, I think the contacts in the valve could have corrosion on them that increases the resistance, even...

    700R4 Information Thread

I think when I get warm weather to work on it again, I will be digging deeper into it. I thought I read that there are adjustable ones ? Frankly, I have a few other "vacuum" things to chase down. I have some of those vacuum "delay" valves in some of the vac lines. One was cracked and I glued...

That can be a problem if the truck has loud exhaust or is just a noisy ride, but I'll tell you, in my truck, it is really noticeable when it locks up. Drive train noise drops a lot. But yes, a tach will help you SEE it if you can't feel or hear it. I think my drops between 200-300 rpm.

    700R4 Information Thread

Thanks for the information ! I can tell you that I find it annoying to engage in second, and I'd have no clue how to stop it from doing so. This baby gets into second and pretty much immediately goes to lock up right after. This is why I put a relay in so I can have it applying the clutch or...

    700R4 Information Thread

U'mmm, well, if it was not disengaging,, or, always engaged, you would know it ! It'd be like pulling up to a stop sign and never throwing the clutch in on a stick. So, even without that vac switch working, you still have something else not allowing it to engage. I forget already all the things...

    700R4 Information Thread

I've found a lot of differing info about this.... My 1983, with a 1989 G20 700r4 will lock in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I have a push button switch on my shifter, connected to a latching relay to disengage it unless I want it.

No, that switch is the Tip-In for the ESC ignition control. The Vacuum switch for the lockup is just above and to the left of the Brake Booster. That switch in my truck cuts out the lockup the second vacuum goes high, like when you let off the gas. I think when I measured when mine switched, it...
