    Overheating Rebuilt 350

Update: Timing and idle appear to be on point. Purchased a temp gun from Harbor Freight. At idle after about 15 mins, thermostat housing was reaching about 202 degrees. Location around temp sender on driver’s side head was about 220. Stock instrument gauge was showing 230-250. I took truck to...

Wow, lot of great information. I’ve got a Edelbrock 1406 Performer Series. Similar instructions?

Will do. I’ll do some research and give it a shot. I did lower idle…just haven’t messed with mixture. Nervous about messing with carb.

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll give it a go once I get my coolant system locked in the next day or so.

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

Yeah, wasn’t expecting that. Adjusted to 10 BTDC and it sounds much better. Temp still climbed to about 215 (guessing on stock gauge) but even slower. I’m gonna get a temp gun to verify. Appreciate you and Rust on the timing education. Didn’t realize how much that factors in overheating. I...

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

Update: New reverse water pump, reverse fan clutch and reverse fan installed. With front end lifted; using water; no thermostat; upper fan shroud installed and a fan blowing air in the front of radiator, I was still dealing with overheating, however, not as quick. Was able to finish break in...

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

It appears you found the culprit…me, ordering a standard flow water pump. It most likely is a coolant flow issue based on whats happening and your keep observation. Much appreciated for catching that and suggestions on purchasing options. I’ll see what my options are between Local, Summit and...

I’m pretty sure thermostat was installed properly. Just removed. Pic attached.

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

Yep, stationary break in. Middle GA. Gets hot, but not enough I’d think would factor in to my overheating issue. It’s in shop, with some air circulation. I’m leaning towards water/coolant circulation issue. Correct fan and fan clutch are a must.

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

Good point on fan clutch. Yes, I really like this GM serpentine setup. Very clean and relatively inexpensive…compared to aftermarket. Got the same setup in my Jeep YJ SBC. That and a little research led me to doing this to my K5. The YJ was definitely a good reference point. Just tried to mimic...

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

As Bennyt pointed out, I have the wrong fan. I’m guessing address that first and try again? Would it still be a good idea to remove thermostat and let it flow for the remaining breakin cycle if all is well with water pump? Yes, RPMs in the 2000s but only for about a combined 15 mins. Thanks...

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

You’re correct, I have the stock standard rotation fan, which is wrong for serpentine setup. I need a reverse rotation fan. Good looking out and Thank you! How did you find yours? It looks stock.

Stock fan attached. Some resistance when I spin it with engine off and cool. No box fan was used. Lower shroud only. Same number stamped on water pump associated with pump I purchased. Pics attached. As far as the heads, they’re stock GM (3973487: 68-79). They were rebuilt too. Nuthin fancy with...

    Overheating Rebuilt 350

Hello. Got an 86 K5. Originally came with a 305/TBI, but a 350/carb was installed back in 97 when I purchased. 350 block came from a 69-79 vehicle, based on my research. Block and heads rebuilt by machine shop this past April. Motor removed and installed by me. First time…somewhat mechanically...

90 burb, New motor, water pump, overheating only when t stat is installed

Hello. Having a similar issue. 86 K5, 350. Originally came with a 305, but a 350/carb installed back in 97 when I purchased. Block came from a 69-79 vehicle. Rebuilt by machine shop this past April. Motor removed and installed by me. First time…somewhat mechanically inclined. Part of rebuild...

    Reverse Light Issue

Thanks for the suggestion, Goldie! Yes, it’s the ratcheting style. Unfortunately, that didn’t work either. I ended up removing the “stop point”on the top of the right side of switch to allow for more adjustment. That seemed to work. As of right now, I’ve got reverse lights in reverse. Thanks...

    1986 Automatic Transmission Leak

Yessir! Turned out the selector shaft was indeed damaged, thus allowing tranny fluid to pass underneath seal. Ordered a used one online and that took care of it, in addition to a new pan gasket and shaft seal. I guess the “caveman” came out in the removal of original selector shaft. Hah! Glad...

    Reverse Light Issue

Having a very similar issue with same type of NSS on my 86 K5 (auto). Just had steering column rebuilt. Now I cannot get reverse lights to activate when I shift into reverse. They come on in park or between P and R when I adjust NSS...best I can do. Replaced NSS with new one, same issue. I did...

    1986 Automatic Transmission Leak

After 2 new seals and about 24qrts of tanny fluid, still leaking. Possibly damaged new seals during install…hard to properly set the seals with exhaust pipe in the way. Or I’ve damaged selector shaft. It’s got a couple of small gashes from a flat head that may be allowing fluid past seal…very...

    1986 Automatic Transmission Leak

Thanks for the tech advice! Parking rod removed. As you can see, mysterious object does not fit head of rod…much smaller. Suggestions on where to pick up new rod/assembly?? I see them on eBay. Also, is the rod/assembly Th700R4 specific?

    1986 Automatic Transmission Leak

Already have pan/filter/fluid removed. I’ll check out this tool, YouTube videos and disassembly options. As for the seal, looks like I can pick one up at Summit. Thankfully, it’s close by. Hoping item in pan is something insignificant… Thank you for the reply!

    1986 Automatic Transmission Leak

Hoping I’m not breaking etiquette here, by hijacking this thread. I have a small leak around the shifter of a TH700 (86 K5, 5.7L). When you say selector shaft seal, is that the location you are referring to? I cleaned it off some before taking pic. Also, I found this in my transmission pan...
