Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

I'm basing non-DOD on the years of vehicles they were pulled out of. I understand there's a lot of posts, but I posted my response right below your question. You probably didn't make it back for a few days. No worries. As for further teardown, it's gone to someone else already, but I will ask...

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

You're not aware of the timelines on everything, but when the engine was still impacting (making contact that I presumed to be a valve) I was getting 0 PSI on cylinder #2. When I attempted the second compression test weeks later but on all 8 cylinders, I only got 90PSI on the first attempt. I...

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

No one ever answered my question when the DOD question was asked and that was this, "The 2004 4.8 had 706 heads and the 2002 5.3 had 862 heads. Were those used on DOD engines?"

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

Thing is that I watched cylinder #2 intake valve closing very slowly when turning over after the damage had occurred. That's what led me to believe it was valve to piston contact. The other thing that strikes me as odd is that it ran good when I shut it off. It's the next time I went to start...

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

I'm buying old donor vehicles that may or may not have original engines. I will say that neither of them had the heat tabs on the freeze plugs which most wrecking yards use. The 2004 4.8 had 706 heads and the 2002 5.3 had 862 heads. Were those used on DOD engines? Additionally, that still...

Got a chance to do the compression on the engine. Definitely many cylinders affected with whatever the cause is.

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

That's a nice idea for having a spare engine lying around. I've got them for 5.0 Mustang motors. I did that for storage when I was parting Mustangs out. I had as many as 5 engines at a time and needed to constantly move things around. Thing is that both engines ran fine at idle for an hour or...

These injectors must be questionable if you've heard of this before. I never experienced this or heard of this on the Ford/Bosch injectors.

Let me clarify. The first engine was from a yard which I didn't not drive until it was in the truck. The second was driven onto the trailer, but I used the fuel system from the yard motor on the one that I drove on the trailer.

Actually, I did ring out the whole harness which took 8 hours for shorts every point to every point and for continuity. Never know if one short got missed. I found like 8 or 9 problems which is why I wonder if I missed one.

That's the direction I'm going courtesy of TotalyHucked. Might be the harness causing the injector to stay open though as I mentioned because it's a Chinese harness and I found a whole lot of miswires. I hope it's actually not an injector because I ran 5.0 Mustangs with Bosch injectors for 3...

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

It's looking that way. Only common items are fuel system, PCM, wiring harness, and throttle body. Only the first engine was from a yard. The second I bought a complete vehicle from a friend which is a long story involving a broken relationship, so it was a good runner. The most recent I bought...

I was planning on oil pump and timing chain/gears on this motor.

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

The second engine and this third engine were both running when I bought them. I drove them onto the trailers. The second one only sat for two weeks between me buying and installing. I've done a ton of Ford small blocks in Mustangs over the years and never had an issue like this. Even without...

Different intakes, same injectors. Another member mentioned the injector possibility. I'm thinking that or wiring short causing it to stay open.

Different sources for the engines. Last thing I want to do is blast a new rebuilt motor.

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

Okay, I'm going to put the starter and flywheel back on it and run a compression test on the rest of the cylinders and post that up next week. Additionally, when I put the next engine in, I think I will remove the fuel pump fuse and check for signal on the injector on cylinder #2 to make sure...

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

No, I should have mentioned the years originally. The 4.8 was a 2004 and the 5.3 was a 2002. I ran the fuel rail, injectors, and drive by wire throttle body from the 2004 on the 5.3.

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

I should have mentioned that I pulled the engine out yesterday. I definitely will not be running the same injectors though just in case. I'll run a compression test on the rest of the cylinders and see what's up. This is definitely a strange one for sure. Thank you so much for your help!

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

Spitball is what I'm looking for. The injector theory sounds probable because I used the same fuel rail and injectors on both motors. Also using an aftermarket PCM harness which had numerous wiring issues that I discovered. I went through the whole harness looking for shorts and opens and had to...

I'm not planning on fixing this engine, I just don't want a threepeat. Wondering if anyone has heard of timing slipping and then slipping back or if there are a number of things that might cause valve to piston contact.

No disrespect intended here as I honestly don't know, but would an engine in that condition run great when shut off, yet act completely different upon attempt to start up days later? Wouldn't the damage occur while running?

Actually, that went back to the wrecking yard. I still have the 5.3 in my garage though.
