EFE, traditional Heat riser & thermac informational

You've put up a lot to digest, and what I've read so far is truthful and honest. Bravo. Up front and right here - I am not in a bashing mood nor do I want to create (much) debate, as I find your article pretty damned good - so far. I DO wonder, however, if you factored-in the advent of the...

2 or 4 inch lift kit

I saw that instruction sheet just recently --- and I'm sure it's in the garage --- where it's now -1°F --- so you KNOW i'm not gonna go out there until I get some better thermal numbers later on.

    Comments on gear pattern?

I've never worried about or tried to actually correct backlash as it is the end product when everything else is running a good pattern. It's more-or-less WYSIWYG after all else is set up ---> correctly. Backlash has always been a spooky bugaboo to anyone who doesn't work on differentials ---...

    1986 Engine Wiring Question

There are DIVERTER Valves and then there is a thing called a GULP Valve. The Diverter valve sent excess air into a sorta muffler on the side of the A.I.R control valve where it was dumped out to the atmosphere - ostensibly quietly as the muffler was full of fiberglass to keep the noise of the...

    87 R1500 Quad Headlight Question

I remember this problem as I worked on these vehicles when they were still pretty new. At the moment, I don't remember the answer --- but I THINK it was a manufacturer's option to use the long or the short pins, but they were switch-matched in that a short shaft won't work in a long switch...

    87 R1500 Quad Headlight Question

As a California retired Brake/Lamp/Smog Inspector --- I can shed some light on this --- sorry for the pun .......... The various states either approved or didn't approve the quad lights from GM for a while --- California being one of them --- for a while anyway. There will be some that light...

2 or 4 inch lift kit

That orange K5 as my avatar is up 2" in the front with new springs and 2" spacers in the back. Below, there is about 1300 lbs tongue weight on the hitch from a load of firewood in the trailer - so it looks a little down in the back. The 2" spacers in the back came with an instruction sheet...

Automatic transmission newbie asking basic questions

The TCC can take a lot of abuse ---- up to a point. The weakest part is the sprag which can roll-over during a WOT high RPM shift -- and I've even ruined a few going for 4th/OD and when it shifted, it makes a strange 'growling" noise and then the damage is done. It's still driveable --- just...

    The old 700R4 questions!

I don't know where you got your information but from a dealership, I can guess. The early 700s had parts failures and were basically a field test for GM to see how they stood up in public hands - but to say that the OD would "shuttle shift" (that was the factory official term for that problem)...

'86 K5 Rear Folding Seat For Sale

Still here - taking up shop floor space. If it doesn't get picked up, I'll burn it in the Spring and haul the steel away. Free to pick up when you come through Hamilton, MT on vacation - or whatever.

What have you done to your square lately??

There was a woman in Garden Grove, CA with the whole ARA catalog in her head --- and the whole store's inventory too. She knew any and all possible interchanges for one part to another --- especially for an obsolete system. She was super. They fired her because she refused to put everything...

What have you done to your square lately??

I converted all my interior lights to 3" LED lightbars. I'm old and I wanna see what's inside the vehicle more than I wanna look cool. Cool for my 2005 Chevy Trail Blazer, with blue interior LEDs and morgue-black rear windows.

    Differential setup

BACKLASH is what is left when all the other settings are correct. Backlash never is something that is a goal although it HAS to be within logical reason! If the tooth pattern is correct, then changing the depth of the pinion or the side-shift of the carrier to get a nice tight backlash is...

What have you done to your square lately??

Got it! No more vibrations and no more fuzzy mirrors! I am terribly disappointed at the company that built these blocks and their stagnant attitude that they are right and I was wrong. If anyone's interested, they can PM me for the name of this anal-retentive company.

    Quadrajet question

I am not sure of E-85 --- but methanol is a great chill factor because it's surface pressure is so low. In the end --- I use my Rochesters because I can and I know them an-n-n-nd I am successful with them and they don't need tweaking when the sun goes behind a cloud. Honestly --- in the last...

What have you done to your square lately??

That's the gist of it --- the angles should be equal or the pinion can be a degree or so below parallel anticipating spring-wrap. But anything over 10° in the u-joint-to-flange is creating a potential catastrophe in that the angle is too severe for the u-joints to handle for long --- if very...

I can't find where your problem/post started --- and I see that you're fighting your brakes and you've tried everything .... let me ask a question though --- tell me if you've answered it already --- OK? Did you change your master cylinder? What I'll offer next will be contingent upon your...

What have you done to your square lately??

That's the monolithic probe hole. It is a magnetic pickup, cylindrical and on a flex that measures the timing after you also capture the #1 cylinder fire on the plug wire with an inductive pickup. I still have my mono-probe and my Snap-On timing light that can perform that process. Although I...

More news .... I had posted this: .... and although the company that makes the spacers says they are supposed to be installed the way they are (small tapers to the rear to point the pinion higher - AT the transfer case ... There's a site that says they should either be flat or reverse them...

    Quadrajet question

You're right, but it's still alcohol and the BTUs are smaller that a "more viscous" fuel. Aboard ship we burned NSFO and it was a gooey paste until it got heated enough to actually flow - even through an UnRep hose. Thickness or viscosity is a great delineator.

    Quadrajet question

Those AFRs were/are so hard to hit that to combat post-ignition - what "dieseling " really is - one idea was to turn on the AC compressor for 15 seconds to drag the engine to a stop. Having localized hotspots inside the combustion chamber --- really in the squish-zone - could promote incorrect...
