    454 Big Block Chevy Build

He really is the exception to the rule. I've read a bunch of his stuff over on the Chevelle forum. I think he is doing quite a bit of port work to get those numbers. Most people dont jump into porting heads, and so they have to pay the people who do. If you are paying someone to port them, why...

    454 Big Block Chevy Build

A couple in stands, a 468 in the truck, and building a 650 hp 496 for my Camaro. 496 has Dart Pro1 heads with Del West titanium valves.

    454 Big Block Chevy Build

Peanut port heads. Good for low rpm torque, but not exactly performance oriented. 781, 049, and 820 castings are good oval port open chamber heads if you want factory iron. Aluminum heads are the way to go if you want to spend the money. Just stay away from the cheap chinese heads. Maybe I...

    Mechanical fuel pump

I've never measured my pressure. When it stops working, I replace it. Also agree, 570 is too small for a 454 396.

Yeah my posts are too long, but... this truck...

My truck looked a lot like that when I started. I had a lot more dents, and a couple holes to fix though. If you keep that patina, you will want to rub it down with boiled linseed oil. I think most people reapply it once or twice a year. If you sand it down, your going to be amazed at how...

Can I use my stock 454 intake???

TBI has better cold starting, and should get better gas mileage. Good driveability, and reliability, if a stock engine is what makes you happy. I like carbs or aftermarket EFI for wilder engines. If you have any interest in keeping the TBI, I might be able to work a deal out with you in the...

Should I make a daily from my "parts truck" 76 GMC....??

I'd make it a decent driver and sell it, rather than chop it up.

Are headers a tool? Otherwise, this... Lisle 18000 cam bearing tool set.

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

That's just one thing I can't cheap out on. ARP bolts go in every head, main, and rod that I build. They're expensive because they're superior to OEM. Especially 50 year old OEM fasteners.

Lifting engine in place with carb studs?

There was a bad batch of iron back in the mid 80's that was causing the cast iron exhaust manifolds to crack. For 2 years Chevy made stainless steel tubular manifolds while they figured out the problems with the iron. My 86 454 came with them, but I thought that was only a big block problem...

Lifting engine in place with carb studs?

Why wrestle with it? These engine levelers work great.

    charcoal ingestion

Was going to say the same thing. As for engine damage, most activated carbon is made from bone or coconut shell. It's somewhat abrasive, but I dont know if it's hard enough to damage cylinder walls, rings, or valves.

    Small block or Big block?

820 heads will give you a bump in compression (113 cc chambers) and still flow similar to 049 and 781 heads.
