    knocking noise

With both valves on a cylinder closed, and the lifters on the base circle, the rockers should be 2 turns tighter than zero lash, assuming that your hydraulic lifters are good. Best to set them with the engine running and warmed up, that way you will be able to tell if a lifter is stuck, as the...

    knocking noise

Sounds more like clattery lifters than a knocking sound.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

That changes I would use 4:10 with a 700R4, or even 4:56. If you change to a Turbo 350, then, you probably don't want to go any deeper than 4:10, or else it will be screaming at 60MPH. If you have a stick, you probably want a 4:56, especially if you have Overdrive. Mike

Taking off passenger head about 37 bolts so far

You probably have a small hole in one or two pistons.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

I would use the 305. Its good enough, it just needs gears.

    Diagnosing white smoke on startup

WHITE smoke or blueish smoke? If it is indeed smoke and not steam, probably your valve stem seals - oil is seeping down the valve stems when the engine is off, and getting burned upon startup. OHV engines are notorious for this when those seals are gone. James

    Towing with a 305 V8?

It can be done, but not with what I think the rear end is. There was no 5 speed automatics, so you have a 700R4, which was not very good in it's early years. I would put a 4:10 rear in it - your 4th gear is Overdrive, so your cruising ratio will be about 2:7 or 2:8 to one, plenty tall for the...

    C20 for towing

I would go with a 400 or a 454 engine and either a 4 speed with a granny 1st or a turbo 400. You should have a 3:73 for a turbo 400, a 4:10 for a stick. Keep in mind though, that Squares are not new vehicles, so be prepared to sink some dollars into it to make it mechanically as good as new...

    1983 454 vs 5.3 LS for towing

I would stay with the 454. The 5.3 is, I think, about 327 cubes, and to make matters worse, is cammed and ported for revs over low-end torque. I am leery about the 700R4, but others say it has been proven to be a good trans. You should look into your cooling system though and have your...

    8-track player install

Problem with modern units is that they don't look right for one thing, and if we have 8 track tapes, we want to be able to play them, for another. J. B.

    Deleting the Catalytic Converter

Yes, it can be removed, as long as it is true that you don't have smog checks. You will have less back pressure, so potentially more top end. Mike

New owner of a Frankenstein K10

The fact that it originally had a 305 explains the Turbo 350. With that 400, you should have a Turbo 400 trans. The Turbo 350 is for engines under 400 cubes. Carefully inspect the front spring hangers, as this truck originally had independent front suspension, so a previous owner converted...

    8-track player install

You just install it the same as a regular radio. If your truck never did have one, you need to find a wiring diagram. The old Clymer's paperback manuals have wiring diagrams for all the Squarebody trucks. You will need a magnifying glass, as they are pretty small and hard to read. J. B.

Installation manual for RCA 8 track player, model 20C405G

Hello folks. Does anybody have the installation instructions for an RCA 8 track player, model 20C405G? It has been out of my 73 GMC for years, and I can't remember how to put it back in so it will be secure and properly grounded. I had instructions, but they are long gone, and there are none...

    Towing with a 305 V8?

If your gearing is right, it will do fine, but if you have that rediculous 2:73 - 1 rear end, it will struggle. You should use 3:73 - 1 gearing. Mike

Ethanol Free Or Premium Or Either

Also, keep in mind that ethanol draws water out of the air. Not much of an issue for a daily driven truck in which you routinely run your tanks dry, but if you only have a single tank, or drive it infrequently, it definitely is an issue. J. B.

1986 C10- Is it reliable enough for a daily driver?

One thing to think about in really cold climates is to use 2 gauge battery cables, and never ever try to use 6 gauge battery cables on an American-sized engine, meaning over 200 cubic inches. J. B.

1986 C10- Is it reliable enough for a daily driver?

In good condition, these Squarebodies are VERY reliable, although I would go after a pre-computer year if I were you - no worries about costly computer replacements, no worries about said computers becoming "obsolete" and irreplaceable. Things to worry about are, if you want an automatic, as...

    Daily driver turbo

Stay away from turbos. Added strain on an engine will mean less, not more, reliability. Also, since you do your own work, if you insist on a blower, a supercharger is better on a gasoline engine than a turbo - less heat buildup, less complexity, no turbo lag. Turbos are better for diesels and...

How close are the aftermarket doors?

I for one would much rather have a GM-made door than one from a metric country. Our trucks are not metric, so if they measure metrically and convert, chance for mistakes. I'll stick with American-made.
