    Rear Diff Carrier

Backlash looks good at 0.006" but it looks like it has too much toe pattern, pinion needs a little more shim. Of course adding as little as 0.010" on the pinion will likely change your side shims.

    Rear Diff Carrier

Yeah if you're where you're at for checking mesh pattern. As long as you have no in/out movement and spinning the pinion with your fingers it stops when you let go you should be golden.

    Rear Diff Carrier

Honestly this is a whole lot easier with the axle off the truck. You can have the opening pointing up and drop it in, about like how changing a crankshaft in an engine is 1,000x harder while in the truck vs on an engine stand, trying to push it up from the bottom instead of dropping in. I...

How much does a Stepside bed weigh?

The mud race guys like the stepsides because they're almost 200 pounds lighter than the fleetsides. Two people should be able to do it but be sure to eat your Wheaties.

no engagement in any gear help please!

My first guess was broken sprag but since you got it going again it would sound like a leaking or stuck pump ring that came un-stuck. By the way revving it when it's slipping will kill your clutch packs, and may have already reduced how much material they have since you mentioned discolored...

    New driveline choice

My '02 Sierra gets 91 all the time. If I dont, I get spark knock and evap control system codes thrown. Plus running 91 I get a nice 2nd gear peel when trying to get up to speed to merge with traffic. Lets the other drivers know "that motherfvcker wants over".

I'd like to have that 72 Nova if it's a fixxer-upper. I had a 70 model and it was my first car. I remember rebuilding the engine at 16 yrs old, and driving it around the neighborhood with no hood. I took the seats out and had to sit on a milk crate to drive it lol. PM me his contact info, or if...

Front Drive Shaft hitting crossmember Please Help

I wouldn't want to apply a lot of shock load to it, like the spacer/adapter for 700R4 to an NP205 t-case. It'll get you by.

Bore vs. Stroke, a little math

You can do standard bore 350 with 400 crank and make 377 cubes as well, may be more torquey than an understroked 400.

Bore vs. Stroke, a little math

I was always under the impression the additional torque was created by the mass of the heavier stroker crank once it gets spinning. E=mc^2 (mass x velocity squared equals energy, or torque. Increasing either mass which we can interpret as the weight of the crank, or velocity which we can...

    Axle and Hub Help???

What's tripping me out is the top pic looks like a 5-lug. EDIT: OK I see the pics are ones you found online, not your actual axles. Whew. But the original post is still confusing. "Rear is the same" does that mean the gear ratio of the rear axle is the same as the current front axle? Or same as...

New clutch difficulty going into gear

Ahh good, sounds like it needs bled.

New clutch difficulty going into gear

Usually associate that with the clutch disk being installed backwards but then it's not "difficult" but a real pain in the ass. Hopefully just out of adjustment, or the old pressure plate was so worn the new one seems too hard to push the pedal down.

That's fucked up, who are you ordering through? I used Transmission Parts USA but that's been a couple years ago EDIT: I found your post where you said you ordered from them, they must have gone downhill since then

    79 Trans am

Stock I think the 403 is only rated to 185hp. The few mods you can do like the Olds 350 heads, flat top pistons, better cam, you're not going to net much more than 350hp. They're heavy but have nice torque. It's just my opinion and we all know what those are worth but I would go with the Chevy...

Is my transmission starting to go?

If reverse is going away more than likely 1st gear is going too. Take off forward while the trans is cool in L1 and see if it slips. If it does shift into L2 and see if it pulls better. If it does the low/reverse clutch pack is going away.

Is my transmission starting to go?

32 year old trans possibly never changed or serviced. check the fluid color, clean the dipstick on a nice white paper towel. If it looks brownish or black my psychic friend forsees a trans rebuild in your future. If not, it is likely sticking valves in the valve body. You could undertake...

Vortec Heads vs OEM SBC Old School Heads

Look at compression. If you have the stock dish pistons consider going to flattops. I'm in the process of doing that now. Also you can do beehive valve springs and get a little more valve lift out of Vortec heads.
