Air compressor for painting my project

A HPLV gun is suitable for smaller 110v compressors. You can buy throwaway versions from Harbor freight or nicer versions for more money. I paint with a 30 gallon tank and have another 25 gallon backup. The thing is that the compressor motor is going to heat up from the run time to fill both...

Water leaking from under dash near the brake pedal.

Could be one or both, or neither. Start by removing the black plastic cover at the top of your second picture. It runs between and beneath the wiper blades and is known to collect debris over time and hold moisture. I recently had a 74 C10 I had to clean out first by removing handfuls of leaves...

    Rear end advice

Speaking as someone who worked on these trucks back when they were still being sold new, I never, repeat, never saw an axle come out of a reasonably driven and maintained squarebody. I have driven K10s with no bearing at all and the c clip did it's job. The 10 bolt and 12 bolt semi floating...

    Headlights quit working

Has anyone mentioned grounds yet? Using a test light, follow your ground wire from the lights, (both headlight and signal) back. I'm pretty sure you will find the issue under the hood. If you powder coated the motor, run an external ground from the back of your alternator to the frame. There is...

    Tune up, than banging sound?

Yes, without video/audio, everyone is just throwing darts. Things like rotten mufflers and leaky pipes complicate things. It's like a doctor checking your heartbeat while the baby is crying. Replace what makes more noise than is supposed to. Square one, start the motor with the hood open and...

82 k1500 lost all forward gears no warning signs at all

4 neutrals and burnt fluid usually points to toasty clutchpacks and/or a failed pump. Can it be something minor? Possible but after about 10 minutes of checking, unlikely. Regarding some of the other issues, 40 year old trucks live in the land of deferred maintenance, rusty grounds and amateur...

I finally realized why I like working on my '81 C10 so much

My 2019 2500 Silverado can be driven on the interstate with one thumb in the 6 o'clock position. Every SB I have owned required two hands. My 2500 is quiet to the point that I feel isolated in the cabin . I have driven then 8 hours back when they were still in production as well as today. Other...

I finally realized why I like working on my '81 C10 so much

I had a late model Silverado 2500 that I put almost 300k on the motor before selling it. I could go months before lifting the hood to put washer fluid in the tank. I won't get that out of any squarebody gen 1 small block. But I also won't be dependent on scan tools, my ability to guess which non...

Light white smoke and backfire at high RPM or under load

A gummed up valve train, rotten oil seals, stuck piston rings, a rat's nest in the muffler, loose rust and carbon in the exhaust. A gen 1 motor that has sat since 2005 needs a little time to wake up from a nap that long. Yes, Mystery oil, berrymens B12 in the fuel system, Lucas Oil Treatment...

    Smoke troubleshooting

It looks white but pictures aren't always as good as being there. It is common to see white smoke from condensation from a cold start, especially in cool temps. How is the engine running? Is the temp gauge showing that the engine is running hot? Is the oil discolored? Stick your head in the...

Better illumination of gauge cluster possible?

I bought some leds off ebay or amazon. I bought multiple packs for each truck as I start tearing into dashes. Most of them do not dim, so there is that. All of the ones I have used "Superbrite" might be the brand, have worked well. The factory lights are akin to holding a bic lighter next to the...

    10W-40 for Chevy 350

Chevy valve stem seals don't cost much more than a jug of heavy oil. A cheap valve spring compressor and some rope and you can change the seals out in an afternoon without a compressor.

    Sbc dumping oil

Near the back of the motor, the most likely culprits are the oil pressure sending unit/line, the oil filter, and the rear main seal.

Besides, most prisons have fiber optic these days and a hookup for each cell. That's how most of us are able to post anyways.

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

I've installed 3 or 4 of the Dynomax systems, usually the 89003s. Yes, they are way cheaper than OEM or custom bent pipes. I have seen prices vary from $140 to almost $300 for basically the same kit, depending on who the seller is. I believe they manufacture them for the long beds and you either...

    Engine Rebuild Kit Recommendations

I noticed in your OP you didn't mention price. Good for you. Rather than tout one or two companies, folks behind me will do that, I'll mention where not to buy a kit-ebay. Lots of buyers are finding out that Chinese rebuild kits made with eyeball micrometers are nothing more than junk. Motors...

Value of a 400/402 big block?

I bought a 1965 Caprice with one of the first 396 engines. Factory holley carb and solid lifters that came in the 425 hp motor but this one was supposedly, and listed, as the 325 hp engine. You could purchase a Chevy full size sedan with the 396/402 from 1965 thru 1972.

Value of a 400/402 big block?

One of the fastest street cars I ever rode in was a 69 Chevelle with a 396/402. This was in the mid 80s. It pulled the front wheels at will and was a legit daily driver. Times were different. I'd have no problem snagging one for a squarebody and they are as easy to work on as any Gen 1 small block.

    Wiring harness options

If you have the room and an understanding wife and neighbors, a donor is priceless. I recently pulled the underhood wiring from a donor 79 for a butchered 83. Everything worked out just fine. I cannot count the number of times I needed a part, and the options were A. immediately pull it off the...

    Pulling all the smog stuff

Depended on the truck. Sometimes less noisy, maybe a bit more pep. Pre catalytic converter, it didn't make an iota of difference. The computer on a 1987 is pretty simple minded. They didn't store many trouble codes . I just had a heck of a time trying to locate a block off plate for an odd...

    Gauge cluster lighting, redux

I stuck with the super bright leds in just plain old white. Super easy on the eyes, and compared to the old factory bulbs it was like holding a lighter up the speedometer.

    1980 SBC 350 w/Quadrajet Carb

My first question is why did the previous owner stop driving it? If for the sake of discussion, there were no mechanical issues when they parked it 20 years ago, things happen. Rings and valves can stick, needles and seats gum up, floats fail, etc. Compression may be low and mislead some to...

    Mpg to expect on an '82 C20 3+3, 350?

My late model 2500 Silverado gets 11mpg unloaded. It is laden with whistles, bells and ticklies. If it quits while I am on the road, well, I am stuck and the repair isn't going to be cheap. If my Squarebody dies, 90% of the needed parts will be stored in the glovebox or behind the seat, ie coil...

    Mpg to expect on an '82 C20 3+3, 350?

If your truck is a daily driver that doesn't require polishing, pampering and high end maintenance, the gas mileage isn't such a bad thing. Not when compared to say a 10 year old 30k truck that needs a scan tool and modules, sensors and certified techs to make repairs, for 2 more mpgs. My 74 C10...
