    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Yep Salty, just looking to get by for right now and put the time, effort and cash in the LS swap. It seems like the only shops around here who are working on Gen I stuff are the high $$ speedshops... one guy I called was almost appalled that I would even cross the threshold of his shop with a...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

You called it... called around today and machine shops 'round here are quoting $500 to bore, hone, cam bearing the block... clean as well but that's it Not sure I see the value in it as I honestly dont need much more than 10k out of the motor until I can LS swap it.. really thinking about a...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Thanks my man...yeah I'm coming to the realization I am going to need to do just that! I should probably just have them bore all cylinders It wasn't rust in the cylinder, it was like a carbon build up...as I started cleaning it off I noticed that cylinder wall is scored all the way. You think...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

I got it free! My neighbor came over and held a 3lb sledge against the #7 and we broke the cardinal sin of smacking two hammers together while I whacked it with a 5lb sledge. I put a 3 1/2" hole saw upside down against the piston to somewhat distribute the weight to the edges. Now at this...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Thanks again Salty! I have looked high and low for a running 350 and I'm telling ya, in SoCal they are few and far between...and if I do find them it's already been pulled and they want $1,500 for it. The "cash for clunkers" program was HUGE in California because they were having a hard time...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

It's out! So here is what have...the driver side bank looks a bit worse and I think it's the #7 cylinder that is the culprit from keeping it spinning. It looks like the top of the pistons are marked 030 which I'm assuming is a .030 overbore so it's been rebuilt at one point. There is carbon...

    Head identification

Apparently there were at least 3 different versions of heads with this casting number. The VAST majority of them were production cars, then as police cars and then as an over the counter "performance" (80's standards anyways). The production castings are prone to cracking however the other two...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

I was actually able to get the TC bolt out! My neighbor has this cool zero offset, box end ratchet wrench with a long handle..almost like it was made for the job! I strapped the transmission under the pan with a ratchet strap going up and over the frame. I'll pull this sucker tomorrow and see...

    Head identification

Nah, no paperwork...and like you most of the stuff I read said they were prone to cracking however there were a couple of differing reads on them... It also looks like at some point the junk version was made in Mexico...

    Head identification

Hey All, I needed some parts to put my project back together and found a guy getting rid of all his SBC stuff. He had a pair of rebuilt heads which I was in need of. The casting number points it to being a worst of the worst (by most estimations) smog head but the casting marks don't line up...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Once the engine and tranny are out I plan on spraying the engine bay with purple power and hitting it with a pressure washer. I will probably rig up some type of capture system underneath to catch all the crud and let the water evaporate. Is there anything I need to watch out for when I...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Gotcha...yes on the fluid and filter...funny this is that the tranny fluid looks perfect, bright red. I wonder if someone rebuilt the tranny recently before they parked it.

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

So now that I am pulling the engine/trans together is there anything tricky about separating the transfer case from the transmission?

    Will do, MUCH APPRECIATED!

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Haha...I can see it now, kind of like a 5 year old chasing a pinata?! Once I get it free (optimistic) and when I go to pull the transmission off, should I just set the transmission on a pallet at that point, keep the engine attached to the hoist, remove TC and separate them?

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Got it..so pull them together, unstick the engine and then separate... can I just put in a few of the bell housing bolts to yank it? As you guys probably know some were just down right nasty to get out! Also, do I just set the whole assembly on a pallet or something to separate? Thank again!

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Even if pull them both together, I'm still left with the issue that the engine won't spin thus still needing to separate the motor with the TC on it? Or is the goal to get the engine spinning and remove then? Thanks!

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Ok..so I have everything disconnected and now see why a lot of people pull this tranny with the engine. I also now realize that I am not going to be able to unbolt the torque converter because the engine won't spin...is that going to pose any problems? I guess there might be enough room to...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Ok...I've got all the linkages and accessories removed and pulled to the side, exhaust manifolds unbolted, etc...the only thing I need to do at this point is remove the bellhousing bolts and motor mounts...any hard to see items that are easy to miss? Leaving the tranny in the truck...from what...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Quick question for everyone....I've pulled probably about 5 engines in my lifetime and the last one about 25 years ago on an '83 Blazer. I can't remember needing to remove the hood on any of them. If memory serves it probably takes a little bit more time but no need to remove the hood, correct?

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Got it all put together and ready to roll...no pub intended. I'm actually surprised at how solid the stuff feels. I'm really not even sure if you could buy the tube to build these things yourself this cheap..$50 for the stand and $200 for the hoist... now I haven't actually used them yet but so...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Thanks Salty! Yep, picked up them up yesterday...they were out of stock at my local store so I had to drive 35 minutes to another store..gave me time to catch up on returning phone calls, haha I looked at the bigger engine stand and was thinking the same thing, looked like the legs would bump...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

I believe you are correct sir! I have read a few threads of people doing it and at first intimidating but as I read through them it's not rocket science. It's a lot (A LOT) of little steps and tweaks. Eventually maybe LS swap but for right now I'd like to get it running and registered. I...
