Don't trash those early cores, simply converter them to the L84-87 standard via swapping in a '152' input drum (30 spline) and 303/304 pump cover and body assembly (non-aux valve body style pump). Install the updated 29-element input sprag gear assembly, 4L60E forward wave/cushion plate, coast...

Mechanical lock up applies in 4th gear only as far as I know. The Superior Tech kit comes with five or six different lock up springs; the stiffest spring will provide the latest lock up road speed. You will likely need to use the Transgo 700P spacer plate and follow their instructions for set...

I don't see why not as long as the material you'll be using is sufficiently strong for how it's going to be used and you have the "program" for each gear.

Very cool recollection...Do you remember installing, adjusting a TV cable? If not or one was never installed, it's a good bet that a CP valve body was involved. Also, the fact it lasted only 20k miles lends more credence to one being on that trans since that's about how long they typically last...

Many times? As in, not ALL THE TIME? If it takes you several times to count the number of teeth, you're doing something wrong. Take a sharpie, mark one of the teeth then start counting. Stop when you get to the marked tooth. That works all the time. If the gear is 100% stripped then tooth...

You're welcome...if you're readings are within the ranges they should be then gov is the next thing id look at followed by valve body but dont mess with anything else until we see your line pressure readings...

Easy - go get a transmission pressure gauge and follow these instructions (start on page 11): https://images.carid.com/bm/transmission-and-drivetrain/pdf/70235-installation-instructions.pdf

    TH400 SWAP HELP

Yep that is a TH400, not a Th475...That said, it may have 6 clutches in the direct drum and 5 in the forward, which was pretty standard fare for Motor Home/Box Truck/School Bus applications. You likely have helical gears, not the straight cut but that's not a big deal. Good luck with the project.

    TH400 SWAP HELP

No clue if you need the linkage either but you will know one way or another once you install it. I'd start by swapping the U-shaped braket from your 700R4 to your TH400. You'll need to run a wire and connector for the TH400's detent solenoid, otherwise you may have upshifting or downshifting...

    TH400 Information Thread

Yep, they did or at least the clutch pack config was the same across the Chevy/Pontic vs Olds and HP Buick turbo 400s; many of those VBs had no spring in the 1-2 acc reg valve, no lip seal in the forward drum along with no wave in the direct, as you mentioned. Most had 12 springs in the int...

Hey Bob - some of the HD and HP TH400s/475s had 6 frictions and steels in the direct clutch along with 5/5 in the forward...Post 73, they used stamped steel apply pistons with selective apply rings so it's very easy to fit an additional friction and steel by swapping out apply rings to short...

Like mentioned above, use blue Loctite and torque to 35-40 ft lbs, though I'd replace those particular bolts with a set from ARP, given that they were loose across multiple drive cycles. The ARP bolts take 50 ft lbs when using their fastener assembly lube.

You can convert either style into a 'constant pressure VB' but unless you're drag racing, it's not recommended...Having the VB generating 175PSI full time is extremely hard on the pump, results in extremely harsh shifts, especially the 1-2 shift and usually results in premature pump failure in...

Yea, the gears available in the aftermarket are color coded but you still need to know what color to buy which means you still need to count teeth on your originals than look up the tooth count by color on the replacement drive/driven gears so you purchase the right set for your vehicle. Also...

80-95 inch lbs is an ideal range, in my own personal experience, for all valve body and aux valve body or rear hold down plate bolts as well as the TCC Solenoid bolts. I do 105" on the 1-2 accumulator housing and 15 ft lbs on the larger 13mm bolt for the detent roller.

Was your speedo accurate prior to the gear(s) failing? If so, you dont need a website, simply count the teeth on the existing gear then order another with the same amount of teeth. If not, use TCI's Speedo Calculator (google it) to determine the number of driven gear teeth needed given the...

Not anymore, no color correlation between factory and aftermarket gears. If you count the teeth, you'll purchase the correct gear.

Remove the housing and driven gear. Count the teeth then buy a new gear w/the same amt of teeth if necessary, along with a new stem seal for the gear and o-ring for the housing. There's supposed to be a little "keeper" ring sitting in front of the seal. If it's not there, acquire a replacement.
