Harbor Freight recalls 454,000 jack stands

I'd bet more damage to vehicles and people is due to pure friggin' stupidity than failed jackstands or jacks of any brand or type.

Harbor Freight recalls 454,000 jack stands

Anybody here have jack stands that still have the labels on 'em? I've got several of the faded orange 6-ton models but have no idea if they're the ones in question. I haven't ever had any problems with mine locking/catching the notch in the extension.

    Sludge In Coolant System

Flush like crazy and flush some more. I'd use a specific radiator flush and run until it got to operating temp a few times, then let it sit overnight. Get 'er warmed up the next day or two and flush again with water. Some of the radiator flushes I've seen are fairly high detergent but non...

Brass radiators - what would you pay to repair vs replace and what can be repaired

There are plenty of aluminum radiators out there for less than $500. No need for a Be-Cool on a driver. A 2-row with 1" tubes will cool a very healthy big block. I absolutely HATE the plastic tanked ones. Hot water directly out of the engine is dumped directly into the plastic fitting on the...

    New distributor

^yep. If ether won't fire, it's spark. Coils croak sometimes...it will have to be something common to all 8 cylinders since none are hitting, so you've ruled out plugs and wires. Coil or power to everything, Check ground also, it's the devil bitch that frustrates even the best mechanic!

Priming oil until it comes out of rockers 5.7 1992 engine

Excellent!!! Glad to hear you got the priming problem fixed.

    Small cap for dist?

They're a PITA but under header wires sure clean up an engine bay. I've seen sets of Taylors that are made for it but custom would be the way to fly IMHO. You'll need brackets, etc. to hold them away from the engine and headers.

Priming oil until it comes out of rockers 5.7 1992 engine

I visited with a few engine building buddies over the weekend, none has ever heard of doing this on anything other than an LS engine. Sounds interesting but a lot more trouble than just using a priming tool. Plus it doesn't test the pump...but it doesn't mean I won't try it sometime with an...

Priming oil until it comes out of rockers 5.7 1992 engine

^ not familiar with pressure bleeding. I've seen pressurized oil tanks for LS engines since you can't spin the oil pump separately but I've never seen anybody do anything other than rotating while using a conventional priming tool in place of the distributor.

Priming oil until it comes out of rockers 5.7 1992 engine

^ yep. The shaft of the distributor (or priming tool) seals against machined surfaces in the block providing the oil passage from one side of the block to the other. I made mine out of an old distributor, ground the teeth off of the gear and it works like a dream. Make sure your drill has...

Lock ring repair on a steel tank?

^ this. You're liable to spend a lot more time and money trying to get an old one fixed and still end up buying a new one. That's what I'd do. The part about spending all the time and money and ending up buying a new one anyway.

    Small cap for dist?

If they're no better than GM's attempt at a crab cap with their Vortec (96+) engines, stick with the old messy one. I've had more of the Vortec caps fail than I care to admit.

Giving rusty parts a smooth clean paintjob?

Most of the big companies make a rust converter. I've used Rustoleum Rust Converter in the past with good luck. A wire wheel is a good start but make sure you wipe everything down with thinner after you've run it so you get all the tiny pieces off. This stuff is easier to use than POR-15 and...

Adjusting new hydraulic lifters 92 5.7

^ rotating 360* as the video suggests puts you right back where you started. If you started at TDC, rotate 90* and adjust the loose ones, then 90* more, etc. until you're all the way around with the full 360 TWICE (since the cam turns at half the speed of the crank, it takes two full turns to...

Whats you gas mileage on your squarebody truck?

And OD trans in the square will help, but the facts are that the GMT400's are lighter and more aerodynamic. It'll be a while before fuel "economy" starts to mean something again. A lot of squares were built with dual tanks because gas was cheap back in the day and it took 2 tanks to get most...

    1982 LWB to SWB Conversion

Not to throw fuel on a fire, but one of the main benefits of a long bed is how much better they are with a trailer hooked up. Much more stable on the road. But....easier to back where you want it with a shortie. So it's still 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Or as a good friend of mine used...

    Big Block Vortec Heads

I wish I had a large oval intake laying around to send you to try but I don't. Check sleazebay for a Performer RPM. Find one in decent shape for a decent price so that if it doesn't fix the issue, you can resell it and hopefully not lose too much on an experiment. You won't feel a real...

    Big Block Frozen Exhaust Bolts

If you're still working on this, my old machinist used a propane torch and some wax. Heat the stud/bolt, then hit it with wax. The wax is supposedly drawn into the tiny space between the threads and helps lubricate 'em.

    Mild port and polish...

There is usually a ridge from the cutter on the short turn radius and smoothing this out will do more than just about anything else. Rough finish in the intake helps keep fuel in suspension, so don't polish them. As far as the exhaust is concerned, as smooth as you want to make 'em. Oh, and...

Would you bore this 350 again or scrap it?

What are the numbers on the main caps? If it's a 4-bolt block and has "2482" on the center 3 caps, those are nodular. These were used for HD (1-ton trucks) and LT1 engines.

454 Bbc timing chain seems a bit tight

The higher end Cloyes and a few others come pre-stretched so they fit like they should. Unless yours is incredibly tight, it'll be fine and should break in correctly. Way over tight will take out #1 main and the front cam bearing, but I've only seen that once.

Are these exhaust manifolds off a big or small block?

Big blocks have evenly spaced exhaust ports, small blocks have center ones paired. Unless you call an LS a smallblock, then those are equally spaced as well. Those look like big block headers to me. And I might catch flack for this, but leave the 396 alone. It'll drink twice the gas of a...

Bbc heads driver side pass side does it matter?

I feel for you, brother, if you're having to heave those heavy SOB's over fenders to get 'em on an engine!!!

Stock lower end smog pistons with 781 heads

Those 290's are "semi-closed" chambers, they'll work very well. They're worth money, though, to people trying to restore muscle cars. The LS5 from back in the day had those and if cammed right, would outrun the square port "race" engines, much to the dismay of the LS6 owners! But...you'll make...
