Making my 1990 Suburban bullet proof. What do I need to do?

Has anybody tried adding plastic saddle tanks for non-potable water? Sure would be nice if you could plumb some moonshine still coils inside the tanks and use it as an engine coolant heat exchanger for hot showers. Should be able to get it plenty warm before the thermostat even opened.

Making my 1990 Suburban bullet proof. What do I need to do?

^ great idea and I'm sure the extra weight didn't affect the door opening and closing or working on the innards of the door a bit! I've known people who have done that to the tailgates of el Caminos for racing but I just couldn't force myself to do it.

Making my 1990 Suburban bullet proof. What do I need to do?

^ sounds like a great idea. I'm equipping mine with Milwaukee impact, ratchet, HackZall and Chainsaw, all Fuel. I have an extra charger I'll wire in, double batteries seem almost like a "must do".

    About differentials

It's possible to swap the candy-ass IFS on half tons to a full 1-ton setup. All you have to do is separate the frame at the fishmouth welds under your feet. Frames are the same size (except the half-ton shorties) and it'll weld right up. This gives you the 9.5" ring gear and a whole lot...

    About differentials

Acceptable is for her to be able to turn the key and start it without a list of crap to do before she starts it and have it warm up promptly. I can live with it, but most women can't and won't. Fighting a cold natured engine is futile and frustrating. I did plenty of it back in the day and...

    About differentials

^ maybe so, but......vortec heads are still a TERRIBLE choice for carb'd applications in the cold. Besides, everybody knows that chrome valve covers and a few back window stickers trump the hell out of a pair of heads, even Vortex!

    About differentials

Nope, you am wrong. Unless, of course, the entire fuel injection system is also added. Vortec heads have NO heat crossover and it will be a turd to try to drive when cold, particularly in the great white north. I had a buddy that went through the same thing in Colorado. Pulled the Vortec...

    Vortec heads vs 350 exhaust.

You're leaving a good bit of power on the table by not using headers. Use Stage 8 locking fasteners and a good gasket and you'll be fine. I'd encourage you to get coated, particularly if you're in a wet/humid area. Coating protects them from rust and can lower underhood temps a good bit.

    An oil gauge question

Use a good mechanical gauge and record the pressure readings at several rpm points and see if the electrical gauge is off by similar amounts through the sweep, then pull the needle and realign the needle or get a new gauge, depending on the results of the test. Engine and oil temps need to be...

    Can it be saved

^ only one said "send it to me" in this thread. There are plenty of others in this and pretty much every other engine forum. Sorry to hear about SoCal with virtually no classics driving around. I was in LA back in the late 70's and there were still quite a few. OT: I remember standing on a...

    Can it be saved

Short squirt of WD-40 in each bore. Doesn't take much, capillary action will get it pretty much all the way around the bore. I would mark and pull the distributor and re-prime it so you don't have dry lifters on dry cam lobes. Swap the gas and fire it up! If you'll watch some of the RoadKill...

Lifting engine in place with carb studs?

Biggest problem most people have is waaay too much distance between the boom and engine. If you leave the chain on the leveler and have one on your boom, you're 2 feet above the engine before you even start jacking it up. Boom tip pointing toward the sky and you still haven't cleared the core...

Lifting engine in place with carb studs?

Plates are fine as long as your bolts are long enough. I have a full set of studs that I use so I can bottom everything out.

    I AM STUMPED!

I believe we have a winner! Those look just like the ones on the back side of tow hooks. Of course, I might have just found them laying around and decided to use them for that, but I kinda doubt it.

    What goes here?

This is EXACTLY why I hate flying. Anything mechanical is subject to failure at ANY TIME. Sometimes shit just breaks. Ask anyone familiar with the legendary 409 engine. They were legendary for kicking the rods out the pan.

    Title problems, vin swap?

Texas makes it a little easier since they added the last 6 digits of the VIN to the registration sticker. Since the sticker is directly above the VIN, they check closely on newer vehicles. My old junk, they figure nobody's going to try to steal one...

    Title problems, vin swap?

Considering the fact that the VIN on the older truck is on the door jamb and the newer one is on the dash with a cutout there in the dash pad to show the VIN, it'll be obvious what's going on. Just go through the trouble of getting a bonded title and be done with it, legally.

    Frame swap

When I build my Factory Five Cobra, I'll order the newest one that's set up for the IRS Buttstain setup. They have made alterations and have jigged it up so it's a bolt-in deal. Ford guys will like that. They won't care much for the LS7 under the hood, though!

    Frame swap

The IRS ain't a bolt-in deal and CV axles aren't going to be nearly as strong as a straight/live axle. Scrap yards are full of projects that never made over a major fabrication obstacle.
