    Suburban Project- Need Help!

If you want to pull it all together, I'd recommend either pulling the front clip or at least as far as removing the core support. It will make your life MUCH easier on both the pull and install. It'll make pulling it with the t-case much, much easier. Whole clip removal is easier but getting...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

IF you rebuild this engine, upgrade to roller lifters. One failed cam at break-in will more than pay for it. Stick with known brands, Speed Pro, etc., and avoid no-name ebay junk like the plague. One other consideration might be to buy a shortblock and just add your heads, etc. to it. I do...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

I use a cheap ratchet strap, run it in a loop between frame rails, then under the transmission at the front of the pan, just to give the trans some support. 2 or 4 wheel drive, I do 'em the same. There's more weight in front of the trans crossmember than behind it, it won't balance well.

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Many times I have tried to effect repairs by removing as little as possible because I'm a helluva lot smarter than the guys trying to tell me how to do it. It's always cost me time and I almost always end up going back to remove those items, costing me still more time. Remove the hood, pull...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

^ I understand they can have higher rpm oiling issues since the mains are about the same size as in a D-9 Cat. Are there any mods - other than a high volume oil pump like you spec'd - that help? My old guru used to talk about using 3/8" copper tubing and tapping into a main, using the tubing to...

For those unfamiliar with them, engine stands are one of the coolest devices ever invented to find washers on the shop floor...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Hazard Fraught has their 2-ton cherry picker for $189 right now, you might need a coupon. The best engine stand to use in conjunction is a tricycle style but with a bar across the front, making it 4-wheeled. This one will easily fit between the legs of the cherry picker to get it transferred...

Wondering if I could get some honest opinions

I think it's a paint job away from being a $10K truck. That's the HD 10-bolt up front, right?

    2WD to 4x4 conversion?

This one was a surprise to me. I was at a buddy's shop and a friend of his brought his father in law to look at some wheels. I was visiting with the guy and he mentioned that he had a 4WD Suburban that he wanted to sell for $3K. I thought to myself that I knew what a $3000 suburban looked...

    2WD to 4x4 conversion?

^ you would have a cat if you saw the time capsule '83 that I bought about a month ago. I have to replace the cracked dash, just happen to have one I salvaged years ago. Fresh paint, perfect seats, 60K on engine rebuild, 40K on trans rebuild, new tires, garage kept the past 20 years and driven...

    2WD to 4x4 conversion?

I have a '91 Suburban that I'm going to frame swap. After looking at all that was entailed to just change suspension, I decided to go this route and should come out money ahead. $500 got me the frame, trans, t-case, 3.73 gears front and rear, rally wheels with trim rings and centers, good seats...

Tall 3 core rad vs shorter 4 core

4-core with same thickness will have less cooling, there are spaces between the tubes that is wasted. I'm going with a 2-row that has 1" tubes.

    Can it be saved

Pull the timing chain and rotate the cam gear to get those unstuck. They should all stick in the over-the-nose position. This should help get the crank turning without those stuck lifters contributing to the problem. Tear it down, you're not going to get this one running without some work.

    Can it be saved

^ most of the time you'll see their bedding or hoard of seeds, etc. I had a 409 given to me that had been an irrigation well with short exhaust pipes. Mice had set it up as a high rise, livinig in the oil pan, lifter valley and several cylinders. So much mouse piss in the pan that it rusted...

    Can it be saved

Any chance a mouse or similar critter found their way through the exhaust into a cylinder with an open exhaust valve? At this point, I'd probably go ahead and pull it so I could wail on it away from the confines of fenders and a core support. From the sound of it, the pistons are going to need...

    Can it be saved

A lot of gerarheads swear by 50% ATF and 50% acetone as a penetrating solution. Cheap enough, might save a lot of time if it works.

    Can it be saved

scenic760, you can use the flexplate tool with the engine in the car but you'll be on your back if it isn't on a lift. Thanks to the diameter of the flexplate, you'll have more leverage unless you have a long breaker bar. The tool in the pic looks great as long as there's access to the...

    Can it be saved

Get a flexplate tool and use it, you can go both ways and get good leverage on it. You take a chance of snapping the balancer bolt or screwing the threads up when trying to turn a partially seized engine over. Once you have the tool, you will wonder how you ever got by without it. Beats hell...

    Colorado folks, step in, please

It's bone stock, as far as can tell. Rebuilt crate engine 60K ago, 700R4 rebuilt 40K ago. Still has the smog pump and all associated plumbing and the belt is in place. I'm debating converting it to TBI, there are plenty of donors nearby. Part of the reason is the ability to convert to a...

    Colorado folks, step in, please

I have recently acquired a nice '83 Suburban 4x4 that I think I want to gift and send to the grandkids in Colorado, from Texas. I remember that when the kids first moved there, they talked about a big tax/registration penalty for vehicles being imported from another state to Colorado. Is this...

Making my 1990 Suburban bullet proof. What do I need to do?

I didn't think this was as comparison thread...I'm a die-hard Chevy guy but have learned over the years that GM did a bunch of stupid crap, mostly to satisfy the bean counters instead of the people who were end users. Same with the other manufacturers. I'm sure as hell not going to overspend on...

Making my 1990 Suburban bullet proof. What do I need to do?

Because Chevy didn't always do everything the smart or right way. Hell, they put 305's in Corvettes!!!

Making my 1990 Suburban bullet proof. What do I need to do?

Just sayin' that a full floating and a Dana 44 or Chevy 10-bolt are a mismatch.

Making my 1990 Suburban bullet proof. What do I need to do?

Prairie Drifter, when you show a pic of a snapped 33-spline semi-floater axle, I'll quit using them. If you'll pull an axle out of one and one out of a full floater, you'll see that the thinnest part of a full floater is a good bit smaller than that of a semi-floater. Weaker. And you can have...
