There are several things you should do in my opinion. First of all, beware of kits from stores. Many don't have quality parts to use and may fail with current fuels. Especially the accelerator pump. Carb swap
Most any Quadrajet will bolt on. It may run ok for you but there are many differences in the calibrations of all quadrajets. Jetting, rods, idle circuits, main circuits, etc. Typically, the Quadrajet doesn't swap around to different applications well without some recalibration.- Quadrajet Power

Float can get hung up, or set a little high, or low. Drain down after shut off may be causing the excess fuel when starting up after sitting. Electric Fuel Pump
Not sure what your set up is and what you are looking to accomplish, but the Holley blue pump will work mounted above the tank. It is about the only one I am aware of. Most all others have to be mounted below. The blue pump would require a regulator.- Quadrajet Power

Check your choke first to make sure it is full open when engine is warm as mentioned above. The Quadrajet has a small fuel bowl, and doesn't require much pressure to deliver for any engines needs. Make sure your choke assembly doesn't have an open port. If it was hot air originally and converted to electric, it will pull vacuum, so cap off any ports if it has one. Beginners Advice to the Quadrajet
If it is too slow, you want to enlarge the port that is usually in the base of the vacuum tube of the pull off. If your vacuum tube is curved, you could heat it up to bend it to open the port slightly, or cut the tube and connect the hose to it.- Quadrajet Power
