Well guys, back with another possible problem. Got the Dana 60 from the donor 1028 put in today. Jacked it up, locked in hubs and put transfer case in gear, marked the tires and rotated the driveshaft 12 complete turns. Front tires pointing at 2:00 and rear tires at 5:00!!! I dont get it, front...

Yea its got the overload springs. Plus data plate lists GVWR as 9400 instead of the m1008s 8800.

need your help again guys! Got a lead on a possible m1028 donor truck that supposedly still has the dana 60 front axle. I only have 2 pictures, and neither of them is very good. But one shows kingpins instead of ball joints so thats a good sign! What do you think, dana 60 or not?

I'm thinking this will be my best option, was just trying to find a cheap bolt on option first. Any idea if the 4.56 carrier will work with 4.10 gears?

If im not mistaken don't the 3/4 ton 4 door burbs use 1 ton frames? If so should be a direct replacement... i hope.

I found a rear 14 bolt with 4.10 gears and out of an 84 Suburban. Would this be a direct replacement or would the spring perches be wrong? Wasn't sure since its out of a 3/4 ton truck.

The only number I saw on the ring gear is 600, or maybe it's supposed to be 009.

Yea that was my plan at first, didnt realize they were selling for $1000!!! Guess thats why mine was removed before they sold the truck. My long term goal is to pick up a m1008/28 from a surplus auction just for the axles and spare parts. But looking for a temp fix to get me through the winter...

    Axle identification

Looks like I have 45 teeth on the ring gear, and 11 on the pinion. So I guess my ratio is 4.09 correct? After reading a couple posts about gear swaps changing this to a 4.56 sounds like something best left to the pros since I have no axle experience. Any idea what a ballpark figure would be for...

    Axle identification

Yea looks like I can get a 4.56 ring and pinion set for under $200, or would I need to replace the carrier also? This is all new to me, never tire into an axle before. But is it worth it since when done I still just have a 3/4 ton axle on a 1 ton truck?

Thanks for this, I'm so glad I checked before engaging the front axle. After rotating the drive shaft 3-4 turns the mark on the front tire is now at 3, the rear is at 9. This sucks!

Yea truck is a m1028 according to data plate. Pretty sure detroit locker is gone, rear tires spin in opposite directions when jacked up, like a standard open diff. Think the springs prolly just sagged over the last 30 years with that diesel sitting on top of them. Haven't checked yet but I...

Well that sucks, really wanted the 60 to still be there. I hope the previous owner at least match the axle ratios when he swapped in the 44. I believe its supposed to be 4.56:1. Don't want it to go boom when I put it in 4x4.

First time poster, long time lurker. Bought an 84 K30 CUCV 5/4 ton that supposedly has a Dana 60 upfront and a GM 14 bolt in the rear. While I believe the rear is a 14 bolt, the front looks more like a Dana 44 to me, what do you think?
