What have you done to your square lately??

Filled the bed with ice chests, cooking equipment, chairs and luggage and drove it to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a week. We were Participants of Cruisin the Coast. 9,618 Registered Vehicles this year. I will post a few pics here, the rest will be in the Events subforum in my Cruisin the...

    Cruisin' the Coast 2022

Over the last few days we have cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned on the Old Truck. I am loading it up, we leave around lunch tomorrow for Gulfport. My favorite-ex-brother-in-law has been making good use of the carrying capacity of my Truck. There is a double burner and two Dutch ovens under the...

    Multimeters?

Part of the answer actually lies with YOU. How much of what the multimeter does can you understand? Then you have the subtle differences between an RMS meter and a True Meter...this can get very deep and very confusing. For my At Home meter I use a Fluke 79. It does everything I need and I...

What have you done to your square lately??

Funny that you bring up this topic, it comes up a lot here with my '87. A couple of my friends get very upset about me using my Old Truck as a Truck. When I was shopping for a Classic Vehicle Mrs. Redfish requested that we get a truck. She wanted it to be nice enough for car shows, nice...

What have you done to your square lately??

I completely agree with you here. None of the current/modern designs look right on these trucks. You have to find something that either is old or looks old. Some of the aluminum "Slots" can still be had and they look pretty good. I was surprised at how many folks reacted to my OE Rally...

Poll: What '70s/'80s pickup would you own if a GM square wasn't an option?

One of the local Mopar guys has one that he has restored. He has a book of the restoration photos he takes to the car shows, he always puts it on top of the radiator. But you have to include the Midnight Express as well. Not many of those around but this one at the Jambalaya Festival...

Poll: What '70s/'80s pickup would you own if a GM square wasn't an option?

I remember my Pop being on the fence and having trouble deciding back in 1977. He knew the first Gen Bronco was a useful and practical choice and they were Very Good in the Gumbo mud down here in Swampy Flatlandistan. I have always driven GMC but I share Pop's love and admiration for those old...

    Cruisin' the Coast 2022

All over the place! I am staying right behind the Island View Casino/Hotel in Gulfport about 3 blocks off the beach on 10th Street . I will be running all over, but probably won't go much further east than Ocean Springs.

    Cruisin' the Coast 2022

2 weeks away. I am not doing anything else to The Truck that might go south and prevent me from going. Last year the night before I was replacing the clutch master cylinder and that almost ended my trip. The front suspension just got a little softening/leveling work and the Old Truck is...

    '87 V1500 2" Lift Advice

My 18 year old son who has no frame of reference told me today, "There is only so much you can do to make this truck ride smooth." I was thinking to myself, how the h*** would he know? But he is actually sort of right. A solid front axle with leaf springs is never going to ride smoothly. I...

    k10 drag link steering question

@Turbo4whl I am sure you know more about this than I do, I always look to your posts as The Gospel. Can you tell me what is the downside/danger to using the drag link to straighten the steering wheel? If the tires point straight ahead and the lock to lock turns of the steering wheel are the...

    k10 drag link steering question

I haven't used them, I really should go back and edit my earlier post. What I wanted/meant to/should have said was, The Drag Link needs to be level. The drop Pitman arm is what I was thinking of. My truck doesn't have enough lift to need any of that. I can positively say that it doesn't...

    '87 V1500 2" Lift Advice

@Ron Sebastian @Shorty81 and @Joshua Keith I really appreciate the compliments. The Truck gets a decent amount of attention when I drive it around and I have to admit I enjoy that. But you guys KNOW what these trucks are supposed to be, you know what it takes to make them look this way and...

What have you done to your square lately??

I disassembled the front spring stack and removed the bottom/overload leaf. The Skyjacker 2.5 inch lift is actually about 3.25 inches and the truck sat nose up. I HATE to have a truck that sits "squatted". It bothered me to the point I had to Do Something. I am pleased to report that I...

That may not look like much but it was a Big Deal to me. The Skyjacker 5 spring stack:

    '87 V1500 2" Lift Advice

Well, I was unable to leave well enough alone. I absolutely HATE to see a truck sitting nose up unless it has a lot of weight in the back. I respect what others do and I don't criticize their trucks, but for my own truck...I cannot stand it. The Skyjacker 2.5" lift is actually a bit more than...

    k10 drag link steering question

With 6 inches of lift you definitely need the step down style Pitman Arm. My advice is to get the front wheels both off the ground and pointing straight forward. Turn the steering wheel to full lock in one direction, counting the turns. Turn the wheel back to center, get the wheels pointing...

    Looking for 83-84 GMC Grille

When I got the replacement grill for my '87 GMC from LMC the emblem was not included. The original GMC emblem is actually 3 individual letters. I simply drilled the new grill and attached the letters with new fasteners. It shows to a very, very close examination but is not obvious.

    Critical of those giant consoles

It isn't perfect but I can put the truck back to original condition in about 15 seconds so I went with that as well.

    Critical of those giant consoles

One must be careful when criticizing the modifications that other folks do to their vehicles. For example you might not like large consoles but the guy with the large console might not like lowered trucks or aftermarket oversized wheels that are not period correct. I think that everyone has...

What have you done to your square lately??

I don't object to anyone doing what they want to their own vehicle, I just want to keep mine as close to original as possible. I wanted this truck to be set up exactly how I would have done it in 1987 IF I had enough money to do it right. I was fortunate that my Dad had a '77 Sierra Grande 4WD...

What have you done to your square lately??

I understand that everyone likes what they like and that we are all different. I wanted (and still want) to experience driving an old Square Body just like I did back in the late '70s and through the '80s. Changing the steering wheel would completely kill what I am trying to achieve with my...

    700R4 to SM465 maybe

Well then, In My Opinion... Your superb Work Truck should be kept with its original automatic transmission. I personally didn't buy a 1987 year model truck to put in a 2017 drivetrain. I wanted the original engine and transmission. The SM465 is a slow shifting transmission. It will never...

    Should I?

I cannot stress this enough, the price is based on Supply and Demand. Where you live these trucks may be plentiful and cheap. Where I live they are rare and expensive. When I was shopping for my truck I spent a lot of time on Autotrader and Classiccars. I saw plenty that were overpriced...

    Should I?

If you buy that truck for anything less than $10K you better ask your Pastor to help you do some Praying for Forgiveness. That would be stealing down here where I live.
