What have you done to your square lately??

Replaced the rear diff gasket and gave it some fresh gear oil today (it was seeping out of the old gasket). Over the past few weeks, the R20 has received new radiator hoses, new thermostat, replaced the TBI intake gasket (which really cleaned up a FAST idle problem), and gave it a new temp...

ummm - lettering out or in on factory steelies?

Hey everyone, just picked up some new tires for the '88 r20. It has factory rims and I can't visualize what the tires mounted with lettering pointed out would look like. Anyone got a picture? Otherwise I'll probably just go lettering in. IMG_2319 by Lineswest, on Flickr

serpentine conversion - worth it in a 454?

Looks great. I'll keep an eye out for that setup. Was that a JY find?

serpentine conversion - worth it in a 454?

That's good to know too. I'll probably do it when the truck gives me a reason like a blown compressor, so I can throw a Sanden in at the same time. You had to move the ac lines to the passenger side right? I was thinking that the standard 5.7 line would match everything well.

serpentine conversion - worth it in a 454?

Thanks guys, I won't do anything too heroic then. Doesn't sound like there's enough up side. I've also heard that the standard pancake ac compressors aren't as good as this larger v-belt driven one that's on the R20 right now (somSanden would be a good idea in a swap I guess).

serpentine conversion - worth it in a 454?

Hi All, anyone want to weigh in on this idea of the serpentine conversion on an '88 454? I'm thinking about picking up the brackets and parts from a 350tbi and then using the KwikPerformance kit: http://www.kwikperf.com/bbc_serp_kit.html But ... is it worth the trouble? I haven't...

Save your dash: new center console and radio mount DIY

I used this rampage console: Rampage 31517 Denim Spice Locking Center Console Amazon has them l listed at about $75 in a choice of three colors I think (black, gray, and this spice color). It's not bad, seems to be decently built, and not so expensive you feel bad drilling on it a bit.

Save your dash: new center console and radio mount DIY

Now the radio wiring part: One of the neat things about this is that you don't have to remove the original radio at all, and I think you can even get away with this without removing any plastic dash parts. I did drop the vent line that goes to the driver side square a/c vent, it's held on...

Save your dash: new center console and radio mount DIY

Good find, I bet that would work nicely for something like this. I wonder if it could be made to work in the cigarette lighter / ash tray space and flip down and up?

Save your dash: new center console and radio mount DIY

Some installation pics and notes for the new console: The original comes out easily with 4 bolts, I used the same bolts to attach new wood mounts to the original holes. The rear is lifted to make up for the change in floor pan shape. IMG_2291 by Lineswest Front is lifted slightly...

Save your dash: new center console and radio mount DIY

Parts: The original center console for these squares is held by four bolts that attach to a bracket (rear mount) or the floor pan directly (front mount). I didn't want to cut up the original console any more so than the dash, but there are many aftermarket units available. Quite a few of...

Save your dash: new center console and radio mount DIY

Hi Everyone, I picked up a very nice 1988 R20 not long ago that has been rarely driven and is one of the nicer old vehicles I've seen. But I have also been spoiled by some of the new radio features that you can pick up aftermarket (like bluetooth, external mic etc.). Now I didn't want to...

What have you done to your square lately??

Got the headliner out, refinished and back up in the r20. Second one of these I've done, and I forgot what a pain these things can be when holes won't line up.

What have you done to your square lately??

What are you thinking about doing for the audio upgrade? I've been pondering this myself some (sorry if I missed that post somewhere in this thread).

Tuffy center console swap for new radio

I've been trying to think of creative ways not to hack my dash apart on my 88 suburban to upgrade the factory radio. I'd like to keep the original in place, probably even powered up, but install something modern in a different spot. Anybody had any luck or experience with these...

What have you done to your square lately??

I know that's true - I grew up in Iowa and the squares are gone. Very rare to see any around salt country.

What have you done to your square lately??

Thanks - the R20 reminds me a lot of what you've got, right down to the traditional hubcaps and rim. It looks nice and friendly but I'll probably pull them and preserve them, it will need tires soon anyway.

What have you done to your square lately??

Got a new squarebody yesterday. The '90 4x4 left and an '88 3/4 ton took its place. Sweet to have nicer paint and a tailgate.

    1/2 ton upgrade or find a 454 3/4 ton

It's the 700r4 right now. Good idea on the upgraded brakes too, trailer controller I've got in hand but need to install, same with the hitch. Georgeb: I've actually pondered brake upgrade in general, those sound like good steps.

    1/2 ton upgrade or find a 454 3/4 ton

I hadn't thought about a new gear ratio, she has a 3.73 in it right now as part of the 4x4 tow pac. 4.23 is the next step I suppose? So maybe helper springs and some simple TBI mods. I've looked into those a little bit, seems like a few hp can be pulled out without too much troubles tarting...

    1/2 ton upgrade or find a 454 3/4 ton

Hi all, I'm inheriting s 21ft RV and want to put it behind an old square suburban. I've got a 90 half ton 4x4 with tow pac. I know I either need to upgrade the suspension to handle it (still leaving the TBI 350) or look around for a different square that is better for towing. Probably a 454...
