    mild 350 build

Here's a build for you: GM base 350/260hp crate engine #10067353. Stage 2 Qjet from SMI Carbs on a dual plane Edelbrock 2101, a Comp Cams 12-300-4 or 12-230-2 cam with matching lifters and springs, Hooker 2453 (for 4WD) headers, and 2.25" duals out the back through some free-flow mufflers (I...

    Alternator question

Any 10SI or 12SI alternator will plug directly in. I replaced my 10SI with a 94-amp 12SI. http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=28215.0 Summit has aftermarket 12SI alternators up to "the sky's the limit" amperages...

^^^ x2 It doesn't take much of an air leak to screw up the idle.

You can also get a single-DIN that has a flip up screen. http://www.crutchfield.com/g_182350/In-dash-GPS-Navigation.html?tp=20212##&nvpair=AG_Size|FFSingle-DIN The most important thing is to have a USB port. I ripped my CDs to mp3, and have 255 CDs on a single 32GB USB plugged in on the truck.

    Engine break in

No, you just need to keep dust and dirt and water from getting in there, while allowing air to get in to be drawn through by the carb through the PCV valve.

    Engine break in

There are two differently sized rubber grommets. They fit in the same hole, but have different IDs depending on whether they are for the breather or the PCV valve.

Single DIN is easy. Double, not so much.

    Aux tank usage?

I think the 88 had the motor driven valve. They're not cheap. Pollak makes the good ones. See if this looks like yours. The older solenoid valve only had one wire to it. This should have five...

    Thermostat Gauge

Careful, most aftermarket senders are a bad fit for the gauge. The sender is independent of engine, but the sender and the gauge have to agree on how many ohms equals how many degrees. This page says the correct unit for the 1988 is a GM #8993146: http://gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=56466...

    Thermostat Gauge

Just below the center of this pic, the temp sender is the brass colored doodad just behind the #1 header tube. You can also see the wire, routed between the valve cover and the Y-nuts. It is black there, because I had to splice on an extension after some PO buggered it.

    Thermostat Gauge

PNK/BLK and YEL is to the idle stop solenoid on the carb. The temp gauge sender wire is DK GRN. My temp sender is between the #1 and #3 spark plugs on the driver's side head. It routes along the lower edge of the valve cover with the spark plug wires.

    Engine break in

Note that ZDDP is consumed during the oil change period. It gets bonded to the wiping surfaces by pressure, then wears off, but it was chemically changed during the process and so is not rebonded. So the ZDDP level in the oil declines from the time it is put in until the next oil change. That...

Engine runs bad after 30 minutes of driving

Geez, they tell you no vac advance on a 383HT?! That's wrong. You could have some bad plugs. If the ceramic is cracked, it can open up when they're hot, arcing to the head, and close back down when they are cold. They can come cracked new out of the box, or they can crack in service. Which...

Engine runs bad after 30 minutes of driving

No, the instructions for the 350/290 crate actually say the engine was designed for no vacuum advance, which is a load of hogwash. Hook up the vacuum advance to manifold vacuum, not ported vacuum. If it's an Edelbrock carb, that's the driver's side port, not the passenger side port. OK, so...

Engine runs bad after 30 minutes of driving

That's a GM screwup. Hook up the vacuum advance. BTDT. Then set the base timing at least 12*BTDC.

    Lackluster Power

When the paper pops out, you know that that is the compression stroke. But the paper doesn't magically pop at TDC. Here's another way. TDC on Number 1 for any Chevy V8 is when the keyway on the crankshaft pulley is at 45*; that is, between 1 and 2 o'clock when viewed straight on from the...

    Lackluster Power

Total timing is initial plus mechanical. Initial is what you see at idle with the vacuum disconnected. Total timing is what you see at 3000 rpm with the vacuum disconnected. Mechanical advance is the difference, which for stock HEI is 20*. The distributor should be stabbed so that at 0*...

    Lackluster Power

Total timing does not mean what you see at idle plus what you see at 3000. Total timing is what you see at 3000 with the vacuum advance unhooked. That is, it is base timing plus mechanical advance. What you ought to see is something like 14-16 at idle, and 34-36 at 3000. You are about 10...

    engine running funny

I'll differ a bit. The general consensus is that SBCs do best with 34-36 degrees of total timing. With a 20* stock mechanical advance HEI, most people would say your best timing is 14-16 BTDC. Generally speaking, more advance is better, right to the detonation limit. All the old school hot...

I have a stupid question about valve covers

Then use these gaskets. Rubber with a steel core so they won't shift. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/21100/10002/-1 And seal them with this. Clean both mating surfaces with lacquer thinner, then rub it in to both sides of the gasket and both mating surfaces, leaving a...

    Wont start, but has power

The ground from the head to the firewall needs to be there. The truck really has three electrically isolated parts: the engine, the frame, and the cab. They are electrically isolated because the engine and the cab are both mounted to the frame with rubber mounts. So that ground has to be...

    Jetting help

A vacuum gauge is good for setting the idle mixture. It won't help with the cruise and power circuits, but if you copy my tune you should be real close on those. Then use the vacuum gauge to set the idle mixture. Also, the pop-up springs should be half of the idle vacuum, so for example if...
