Planning my Suburban build - Advice wanted

Your vehicle is setup perfectly for what you've described as your stated purpose. Maybe get some crossover steering into it but beyond that, it sounds like you want to do it for looks. And that's okay. But it's even overkill for what you've stated. I have similar intentions for my rig, and it's...

    How to "Un-Lift" my suburban

It's my understanding that you'll need to have 2" lift for the crossover steering. I say put a 2" lift in it, new shocks, and drop down to 33's.

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

No worries I know that saying and I love it. I smelled what you were cookin'! All my friends are the kind that'll use things like that against me, so it's all good :D

    Thanks @Tonimus. Much appreciated.

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

HAHAHAHAHA Exactly! So, at first I attempted to follow the "1 wire alternator" install, which *does* have you put the battery wire in 1. It didn't seem to charge, so I decided to plug the other wire in to the other side... forgetting that I needed to swap them. It started charging. Then I...

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

I already pulled it by the time I posted. I've got to go out this morning and see if the battery survived the night after taking a full charge. EDIT: Went out this frosty morning at 19 degrees. Battery measured at 12.87 volts... which is spot on. Connected the wires correctly (they were...

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

Thank you for the response, ,I'm an idiot. I had them hooked up backwards. I was so sure I had it right, but I just went back and looked at before and after pics. Well, at least the mystery is solved. I shouldn't work on stuff when I'm tired. Thanks again.

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

Ugh. I am chagrined. I went out to to my burb to replace the 10ga wire going from alt>battery with a 1/0 gauge. Overkill, I know. It was almost free. Anyway, the truck had zero power. Zero. Zeeerrrrooo. Measured voltage on the battery: 0v. Brand new battery. Disconnected the truck battery, and...

    New alternator install

I just put the same Alternator in my 1988 Burb. Was a direct bolt-in although I had to swap the pulley. I'm also upgrading the wire to the battery, but that's it. See my thread in this sub-forum.

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

A HUGE thank you to everyone in this thread! I got the Summit 140A alternator, swapped the pulley, and installed it exactly the same way as the old wiring, and fired it up. BOOM. The good kind. 14.4V at idle. A quick thank-you video: Also, the truck has not idled this well in so long. This...

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

And that's how I took it. Being able to "hack" it to get home is a good thing! That got me thinking, it would be good to be able to hotwire most of the vehicle...

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

Thanks again everyone. I was admittedly quite intimidated at the idea of changing the pully until I saw this YT video: Well that looks super easy! I'll be buying that correct alternator on Summit, and the wiring harness for it, and swapping the pully. I sincerely appreciate all the help...

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

Well I thought this was solved, but then I looked and the alt linked was for a V belt, and mine has a 5 groove. So I check the other models, the next model number up is a SIX groove pully. *sigh*. The search continues.

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

Thanks everyone, this has helped SO MUCH. I do have off-road lights and am adding a winch soon, so I think I'll go with that Summit 140A that @Tonimus linked. Thanks again. And yes, I'll fix the wiring too!

Alt Replacement Options? A bit confused.

Hey everyone, the alternator died in my 88 Burb with a small block. It's not a serpentine setup, but still looks like a serpentine pully. The truck is intended to go deep into the Nevada desert. I just spent $225 on the best battery I could find under $300, and I want an equally good alternator...

Need Recommendations for 6 lug 16 or 17x8" Steel Wheel

I see some, but most have a lot of backspacing, in the 4-4.5" range. Stock 15x8's are about 3.6". So I'm thinking 3.75 for a 16 or 17x8 wheel would be good, even if I have to run a 1/4" spacer on a 4" BS wheel. Can anybody recommend such a wheel that they can confirm fits properly? The tire...

At that kind of mileage, FiTech EFI would pay for itself rather quickly too. 4mpg seems way low to me as well.

What size tires for 4 inch lift?

I had a K20, years ago, with 4" and 33's. It looked good, I thought. I am fairly certain 35's would have looked better, and with some trimming, 37's. Wouldn't run those on a 44 or 10 bolt though.

‘86 C10 Cargo light confusion. Help!

You'll always have 12v. This is normal. The interior lights are switched at the ground. The switches themselves are in the door jambs by the hinges. When you open the door, they pop open and ground the bulb. Simple. One of them is probably damaged. Or both of them.

Questions about turning a Burb into a 4 door pickup

Thanks for all the input everyone! The deal breaker here may be the inability to use a truck tailgate without having to graft on a whole truck bed, and... I genuinely don't want to have to do that. Plus, when looking closer, I saw that the ribs in the roof start behind the drivers seat, but on a...

Questions about turning a Burb into a 4 door pickup

Pretty sure it was here, actually. Let me see if I can find the thread. https://www.gmsquarebody.com/threads/suburban-to-avalanche-conversion.6366/ I'm mostly concerned about having the equipment and skills, and figuring out how to cap the bed rails.

Questions about turning a Burb into a 4 door pickup

Ah that would explain why one guy actually grafted on about a foot of pickup bed, with tailgate. It looked good. As much cutting as I'll be doing, that might not be a horrible route to take.
