Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

Working on old vehicles from the rust belt is no cake walk. Torches, big hammers, chisels and a lot of swearing are all tools you will use daily.

In my experience, I found that about 15-20% of techs are excellent at their jobs. The rest fall somewhere in the realm of mediocre to lousy. I have work in, managed, owned and provided technical support to service departments since the mid 80s. The diagnostic abilities of techs is getting worse...

Starter won't dis-engage when key is turned off.

Yes, you are correct, it is Watts law. To get the same Power(Watts), if the voltage drops you need to increase the Amps. I was not trying to puff my chest out or make you look dumb. I just want OP to get his truck fixed. If I am not mistaken, the OP had a clicking, no crank issue he tried...

    Replacement mirror heads and elbows?

That mirror "elbow" might be an aftermarket or from a painted mirror. The GM ones were stainless. Just twist that bolt head off and replace the mirror head. You can find those heads used or aftermarket. Just search GM Camper style mirror head. Many choices pop up.

Starter won't dis-engage when key is turned off.

You said you replaced the lock cylinder. I would look at your ignition switch adjustment before I did anything else. The switch is at the base of the column. If it cranks with the lock cylinder in the off position you either have power engaging the solenoid or the contacts in the solenoid are...

    1987 Chevy V10 steering wander

Don't even get me started with "It's in the green". I don't know how many times I have had to get involved with a case where the alignment is the issue but it is in the green. When I ask what are the angles, I get a blank stare and the tech repeats, "it is in the green". Most guys in the car...

Any good alignment will include a print of before and after. If you went to a tire store you probably only got the toe set/checked. Is your steering box centered? I have seen so called alignments done by removing the steering wheel and put back on so it looks straight.

Why take a nice original truck and make an abomination out of it? Flip that truck and buy one of the CUCVs that are all over the place. Then you can add a vintage air system if you need A/C. That will be WAY less work.

Yep, a 12 point head bolt. Snap-On sockets are thin enough. Or just take a bench grinder to a junk socket like a Craftsman or Husky.

Do I restore my AC or?

If the hack method works for you, keep doing it. It is totally wrong and half assed but it is your vehicle not mine. You are not vacuuming oil, you are boiling water out of the system and pulling air out of the system. When I learned A/C in the mid-80s we were taught to drain the system by...

Do I restore my AC or?

Industry standard is 90% but since GM says additional .25 lb. then follow that. I can tell you from personal experience that 90% works and no components replaced. I covered hundreds of cars at my shop throughout the 90s. People did not want to pay to replace hoses, or hard parts. We replaced...

Do I restore my AC or?

You do not need to change compressor or condenser to convert to R134a. You do need to drain all the oil and replace it. Make sure to measure what you take out of each component so you can put back equal amount of R134a compatible oil. You do need to install adapters for the service ports. If...

Do I restore my AC or?

The whole regulation thing is silly. If you are trying to prevent it from hitting the atmosphere then stop selling 1 lb. cans at Walmart. As @Ricko1966 said the problem is not the pros, it is the backyard idiots who keep recharging a leaking system. Well them and the less the scrupulous repair...

Searching for My Dad's 1979 Chevy Suburban

There is a gear on the output shaft of the transmission called the drive gear. The other gear is called the driven gear. The driven gear is the one the cable fits into. A couple of things. Jack it up, disconnect speedo cable at the gearbox put into gear and see if the driven gear even spins...

Do I restore my AC or?

The stuff on Amazon is R12a which is marketed as a drop in 100% compatible replacement refrigerant. The Canadians use this regularly. I have zero experience with it. If you are going through the trouble of replacing everything, why not just convert to R134a and be done with it. R134a is...

    A/C REBUILD w/R-12

You will not notice a difference in performance using R12 or R134a. These systems were so oversized to begin with. Don't overthink it. I have converted hundreds on systems over the years. Just evacuate the system, drain as much oil as possible and add R134a compatible oil. In your case just buy...

Don't forget the leaf springs are what keep the axle in position. If you have a broken center pin, or worn bushings at either end of your front springs the axle can move around. Also make sure the rear is good. If the rear is moving on you it can cause an issue too.

whats every body using.. looking for a new stereo head unit

Thanks for posting that picture. I was looking at them or Retro Sound. If there is no option to dim that display then I will find something else. @totallyhucked Not sure which model radio you have but see the instructions, page 11, for Custom Autosound radio. It shows there are 7 brightness...

    Body repair panels

Thanks for clarifying. I did buy some other smaller sheet metal stuff and what I got from AMD fit with minimal tweaking. As was stated above, OEM replacement was not perfect either. There was even difference left to right on original stuff. My '87 has been in my family since '88 and the body guy...

To each his own. I just don't get it. I am not saying others shouldn't. Vehicles are personal and you should be able to modify them how you like. Within reason, of course.

    Body repair panels

I am restoring my GMC and can tell you that used is way better than repro. The body shop also concurs. I needed rockers, cab corners, one door and one fender. Found used fender, NOS door and one NOS rocker. I bought one repro rocker and it was slightly different but worked. I think LMC...

I don't get the whole lift kit and giant tires thing. I don't want to have to climb a ladder to get in my vehicle or do overhead presses to put anything in the cargo area.

Removing AC unit - Is there a big hole to fill?

R134a is a drop in replacement for R12. Change o-rings and oil, charge it with 10% less and it will work fine. You can change the orifice tube and it will be even better. I have done hundreds of cars like this when I had my own shop in the 90s.

Removing AC unit - Is there a big hole to fill?

Some parts stores loan out tools. You should check with them. Then you can vacuum test your system. Understand that when you pull a vacuum on the A/C system it is not to suck out dirt. It is to boil off any moisture in the system before recharging.
