    Leaking transmission pan plug

Hopefully that fixes it for you. I’ve been straightening out warped OE pans, out of fear of getting an out of spec aftermarket pan. If yours holds up after this I might get my faith in after market pans restored a little.

TH350C/700R4 yoke weep hole: To plug or not the to plug?

Update: I’ve replaced the O ring inside of the cup. I will watch it the next the few days. If it still leaks, I’m going to plug the yoke.

I hate the power window and door lock switches

The ratcheting crimper is a game changer. I remember the absolute misery of trying to crush butt connectors with lineman pliers or channellocks. Soldering is also a tedious affair in tight spots and isn’t really super protected against vibration damage. My ratcheting crimper (I forgot the brand...

I hate the power window and door lock switches

I have experimented a lot with different crimping techniques. The best that I have found is to use ratcheting crimpers with heat shrink style butt connectors. The plastic melts onto the wire insulation and "grips" it, this makes it harder for vibration and movement to cause a wire to back out. I...

    Leaking transmission pan plug

I would try an appropriate size rubber washer and teflon tape on the existing bolt. While it kind of defeats the purpose, as a final resort, you could just JB Weld the drain plug into the pan if you do not want to go through the trouble of changing the pan again. I have never really worried too...

TH350C/700R4 yoke weep hole: To plug or not the to plug?

My TH350C on my '85 C10 like spit a large amount of fluid out of the yoke weep hole when it sits for about 2 or 3 days. It is my understanding that an O ring needs to be replaced on the little cup on the output shaft. I will go ahead and do this, but in the unfortunate case this does not stop...

Clear coating over patina: anybody done it?

Beautiful result. At quick glance, I’d almost accuse it of being a repaint. Unfortunately, the trucks I’ve gotten either didn’t have enough paint left to polish or had paint missing in several places. Mother Nature and Father Time have not been kind to ‘80s GM paint.

Clear coating over patina: anybody done it?

Clear coating can often create more problems than it solves. I think temporary protective coatings like the various waxes and wax-like products on the market are better for preservation than more “permanent” products like the various clear coat paints. It sounds easy enough to just “cap”...

    OIL

Honestly, I’m just glad to find oil still in it more often than not.;) On a serious note, 3k to 4K seems reasonable. You could maybe even push it to 5k with certain synthetics. The overall condition of the engine in question could play a part too. This is definitely a “Mileage may vary” type...

    Modulator vacuum line

I’ve been running with a worm gear clamp snugged on it. It’s held up so far for the year or two.

    Modulator vacuum line

I’ve had a hard enough time keeping the little rubber boot at the end of the hard line attached to the modulator. I am not even going to entertain the idea of making the whole line out of rubber. Get a cheap harbor freight tubing bender and some new metal line and just do it correctly now to...

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

Whether you have th350c or 700r4, always double check that your torque converter lockup harness is intact and wired correctly. You can also bypass the automated vacuum actuated lockup and convert to a toggle switch for on-demand lockup. I’ve seen some people use a floor mounted high-beam switch...

    Blower motor date codes?

They tend to be treated like consumables, any codes on them likely indicate origin of manufacture rather than date of manufacture. You can use clues to determine whether or not it may be original to vehicle. Two big giveaways are the condition of exterior finish and condition of the plastic...

Biggest jobs you have completed in the shortest amount of time.

I have a feeling I’ve spent more time recovering lost hardware/tools on “small” jobs than I have performing actual “small” job in question when things don’t quite go according to schedule. Things like sheared/rounded bolts and stripped holes have added a lot of grief on otherwise easy jobs as...

    Interior Package

The nastiest OEM panels can be made fresh again with sand paper, JB weld, SEM paint, and a lot of patience. Degrease and clean parts to be painted like your life depends on it, adhesion promoter is also good to have. Some are cracked beyond saving, but I have successfully brought some back to...

Biggest jobs you have completed in the shortest amount of time.

The biggest issue with the hobby of old cars or even repairing your daily driver is finding time to do the "big" jobs such as replacing internal engine parts, or other major driveline components. In this thread we shall discuss times when we finished jobs far sooner than expected. The absolute...

    GMC-IH

This has been fun to watch. For a body swap build, your truck looks nearly factory on the outside to the untrained eye. The extra work you did to the dash to accommodate add-ons and mods is impressive too.

Does dash pad go under windshield weatherstripping?

OE dashes can warp and aftermarket ones tend to need a lot of adjusting/trimming to fit correctly. It’s also easy to drop or misalign retainer clips during installation, so double check that too.

Power steering fluid .. what type ?

I’ve been dumping cheap generic Oriely ATF fluid in Saginaw pumps for years, I even dumped Mopar ATF-4 in one once, because I had some left over from another job. The old Saginaw systems do not seem to care what you dump in them. I’m not even sure why generic dedicated power steering fluid even...

    Replace Steel Dash

LMC actually sells complete new ones now in three styles. I’m not really sure what difference between the styles is, other than the location of the winshield wiper switch and slight changes to the shape of the bezel and pad.

    Replace Steel Dash

Just curious, what kind of damage does your dash have? Is it rusted, wrecked, or did someone botch a radio install horribly?

Only Speedometer and voltage meter working

Lots of things that could go wrong with fuel gauge. If your grounds on the frame and wiring/circuit board leading to the gauge, check the resistor on the back of the gauge itself. If it has the right amount of resistance, it’s probably a bad guage or a bad in-tank sending unit.

If you cut the back out and weld the bed to the cab, you could make your own Avalanche.

Swapping from dual to single headlights 1984 Dually

73-80 front clip swaps are not worthwhile, unless you have complete donor truck to get all of the parts from. For 81+, single headlight, dual headlight and the wacky looking post '89 stacked headlights that many people are obsessed with swapping onto older trucks for some odd reason are all a...
