How many bolts hold the transmission on and where?

Then you don't have a flywheel, you have a flex plate...They are not the same nor can the terms be used interchangeably...Just FYI if you ever have to order a new flex plate and start searching for 'TH400 Flywheels'.

How many bolts hold the transmission on and where?

Do you have an auto trans or a manual?

How many bolts hold the transmission on and where?

Not really. It's much easier to simply remove the trans, get it out of the way so the flexplate can be removed and new one installed with ease.

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

Your new aluminum 2-3 acc piston is threaded? I've never encountered that before. It should have a smooth bore. You can use a press or vice to compress the spring to install the retainer clip. Test fit the piston without the spring then put a little assy lube on the shaft if it's a bit snug...

    Th400 Torque Converter Shaft Seal

Since you will have the pump open, do the following checks: - Inspect the pump body working surface for scoring, unusual wear, etc - Check the leading and trailing edge of the crescent - wear here is ceru detrimental to line pressure management inside the unit - Inspect the drive and driven...

    Th400 Torque Converter Shaft Seal

You're welcome...I should clarify my above to say the pump would have to come out and apart so you can replace the bushing, if worn as the transmission will already have been taken out so you can replace the seal. Also wondering if Rock Auto is listing the pump's perimeter o-ring seal that seals...

    Th400 Torque Converter Shaft Seal

Check the pump bushing once you have the front seal off. If it's excessively worn, trans would have to come out so it can be replaced.

350turbo out 700r4 in expected cost?

2WD or 4X4? Also, are you doing the physical swap or outsourcing it? Figure $150-300 for a cut/balance of the driveline by a driveshaft shop (or a new driveshaft) and perhaps some work to move the X member back. There's also companies that make custom cross members for such swaps. Here's TV...

    TH350 Plug Question in case

Nice, thanks @quicksilver702. Reach out to me off-line if you run into any problems with the build...Since we are in the same city (I'm in Providence which is NW Vegas) I can help, if need be.

    TH350 Plug Question in case

Nice...Please post some pics of the valve line ups and casting itself if you can (no rush)...Curious to see what was done...

    TH350 Plug Question in case

You should be able to either drill through it (be very careful if electing to do to this) or perhaps punch it out with a drift by collapsing it on one side. Do you still have the valve body that was modified?

    TH350 Plug Question in case

Looks like someone may have modified that unit for manual shifting. What does the governor look like? Is the manual low control valve blocked in the vb? How about the kickdown/downshift valve?

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

Keep temps under 200 when using non synthetic, all auto transmissions. Run though the radiator then to an external cooler or vise versa (order isnt as critical, IMO). Two things kill more automatics than anything else: RPMs and heat.

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

Yes - never reuse one way assemblies in any transmission unless you like doing the job twice...While the ones in the TH400s/4L80Es are fairly resilient, if your luck is like mine, they will fail on you if you reuse them. Not worth the gamble to save a few lousy dollars, IMO.

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

Then you don't have any sprag OWCs, you only have roller clutch OWCs (low and intermediate), unless someone has been in the unit prior and replaced the original direct drum with a 4L80E or 64-70 TH400 direct drum (great, if so).
  16. NickTransmissions

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

What year is your TH400? It will if the direct drum that came in your TH40 has a smooth race (1964-1970 units have it). If it has a cammed race for a roller clutch (1971+) you either have to buy the 8-element roller assembly or swap to a 4L80E direct drum. If you do so and use the 4L80E outer...

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

Contact transpartswarehouse.com on Monday and request the intermediate and low roller one way assemblies for your TH400. Specify the type of intermediate OWC you need (dog bone sprag or roller type assembly). Also if your application is high RPM, street-strip - increase intermediate clutch...

    700r4 tv cable adjustment

I used that kit once, took seemingly forever to get it all installed, lol. IIRC it used to be called the "SK700-SR". I typically install the JR kit and do other things to the VB as needed/required... Gauges are cheap, smoked transmissions due to TV cable issues are not...Amazon has combo...

    Th350 not shifting

How much vacuum is the engine making and how much at the modulator? Also check the governor gear as Matt suggested - make sure the gear isnt stripped. If governor is fine and vacuum is sufficient, call the builder. Could be valve body or issue with the intermediate clutch itself.

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

I normally dont use shift kits in TH400s and 4L80Es as they arent necessary. Dual feed the direct clutch internally, rollerize the output thrust flange, install the Sonnax TH400 boost valve/sleeve and spring kit, drill the high clutch feed out per your converter stall speed and desired shift...

    Rebuild th400 or 4l80e?

Run it through the radiator then to the ext cooler. You're giving up a lot of heat exchange by not including the internal cooler in the system. Also, Id swap in a 4L80E if it's in your budget to do so.

    700R4 won’t stay in overdrive

Yep - run the 4L65E Alto 3-4 clutch and steel module. Has seven friction dics and six steel plates vs six and five for 700s and 4L60Es; you'll need the 4L65 apply and backing plate. Additionally, run the 4L60E 97+ bonded apply pistons and 2nd design return spring in the forward drum. Larger...

    700R4 won’t stay in overdrive

You're correct. The 3-4 clutch is going out. Drop the pan to confirm (and to drain the fluid) . If you see burnt clutch material, put the pan back on with a few bolts and yank it out for overhaul. Install a new torque converter as well. Upgrades for towing include: - Transgo Jr shift kit -...
