Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Oh I know an emissions era 305 is going to be what it is and I know it, I just know this was way worse than a normal 305 missing the cat. I really think that moving the timing back to ported made a difference. We will see when I drive it tonight. I really liked the way it idled on manifold...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

It does. I could nit pic it and the kit isn't perfect but for the price paid I'm happy!

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Update on the NOx thing. I richened the idle mixture up 1/4 turn, and drove it at lunch. No noticeable change. Then I remembered that I had switched the vacuum advance from ported to manifold, and that retarding timing will lower NOx usually. So I changed the vacuum source back to ported...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Well I'll tell ya, the cat I took off looks pretty decent inside. With a well tuned carb a cat should last for years and years, it won't last as long as it would on an EFI car though. A lot of vehicles in the late 70's though the early 90's came carb & cat equipped from the factory, and todays...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Ok now I have another issue I'd like to make improvements on and I just know @Ricko1966 will have some good ideas on this. So he doesn't have to read the entire thread, the short version is I went from a single exhaust with a catalytic converter to a dual exhaust system without cats...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Plan is to weld all the joints together after I'm happy with the setup, so that would be after the cats are on and I'm 100% sure I'm keeping these mufflers, which in reality I'm quite sure I will do.

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

All you picture ****** here ya go. Since the story and the info here is completely useless maybe these will be useful.... Below, here are the exits! The Thrush turbos. That band clamp was just temp, and I can take that off whenever. Below right side muffler and tail pipe to pump and...

1980 C10 backfires through carb under load

Well you have taken an emissions era 305 and stripped the emissions stuff off. No offence, but it's no surprise it's no longer running well, it can be tricky at best to get these 305's to run decent after that. But the most common causes for backfiring up the carb, is too lean of a mixture...

    Pulling all the smog stuff

@DoubleDingo You are right about that and nothing any of us say will change that. I have to admit I just went to dual exhaust on my truck, and until I get to the first of the month and get paid I'm having to run without a cat, but this is just a small two week gap and they will be back on.

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

I still need to do the shields and yes I know I still need to take pictures which I will do tomorrow. The low resonation I was complaining about is gone with the tailpipes installed and generally the exhaust note is more mild, which is what I expected. At idle you cannot hear the exhaust at...

    Pulling all the smog stuff

@Radiohead & @Ricko1966 Did ya guys catch the part where he'd step over us on his way to buy a beer if one of us "strangers" was having an episode on the sidewalk. I guess he's never had help from a stranger because he was in a situation and needed help. Man I remember one time I did something...

    Pulling all the smog stuff

I couldn't agree more, and it's nice to see someone say things like this besides me. I especially agree with this part: I don't know what some people don't get about that. It seems like it use to be team us - as in the general population, now it's me, me, me....

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Ok videos from this morning! These are all driving videos, with the thrush turbo mufflers on, but no tailpipes. First video, in town and then crossing the river. Second video on a secondary road at 60-65mph in overdrive and up a slight hill, I really hope that big of low resonation goes...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Lunch update. Both tail pipes are on. I'll drive it like this tonight as I doubt I'll have time to play with shielding or wrapping tonight. But I can get a better take on how it really sounds. I'll try to get the videos from this morning up since I didn't have time to do it earlier. As for...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

That's a good idea on the plate, and I might do that. As for the "alcamahol" I need to knock that chit off and I know it....

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

I know, I know! Like a warned earlier install time before and after work is limited. You'll get photos of the completed project if nothing else and I plan to shoot video so you can hear it. I actually took some video today on the road without the tailpipes. I'll try to get that uploaded this...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Well, this afternoon was a disaster at the shop. So I got to work this morning at 6:45AM, 1/2 an hour before the 8AM opening time I get a call on my cell from the front counter guy, he's got a family situation and needs the day. Ok, he's a good guy, so of course I give him the day without a...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Yea, I was kind of considering that too. Pretty similar to this stuff I was sold to use as a shield. We'll see I gotta get the system install before I can consider how the shields are going to work.

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Lunch time yielded studs installed into the manifolds and down pipes installed. That's as far as I have made it. I have read some people complain that the right side down pipe in the kit is not bent enough. I would agree with that. It's not to bad I don't think. I think I'll be able to...

    Pulling all the smog stuff

I agree. Keep it as GM intended. By the time we got into the 80's any emissions controls were so integrated into the engines, it's hard to just chop stuff off... My thoughts anyway.

    Pulling all the smog stuff

Oh, that's right. For some reason I was thinking it was in the manifold but your absolutely right it's in the Y-pipe or just after the Y isn't it. In that case pulling the air pump will very likely set off the check light.

    Pulling all the smog stuff

I'll give my opinion on this. The OP will be in regular print I'll be in italics 1. They said the trucks would run better after that. Is this true? No. I don't know what else to say that is simply false. 2. What exactly do they mean by "run better"? Is it smoother, less noisy, or just have...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

Ok today is the day! Got to the shop about 1 1/4 before open. All I was able to get done was to remove the old exhaust. The main issue I ran into was that the down pipe to manifold bolts were in bad shape. I should have known that would be an issue, but I just didn't think of it. So I spent...

Exhaust single to dual on a tight budget - Then we get into some after issues

My install time will be limited as it always seems to be, so there might not be any in progress pic, but certainly there will be pictures after the job is done. The one bad thing about the dump bed, is I can't hang a shield off the bed, like I can for the tank switch, where I can just hang a...
