I have to ask, have you ohmed the wire from switch to switch? Is there any chance that the contacts in the driver's door switch are the problem? I would put a meter across the driver's door switch contacts and measure that resistance and I would measure the voltage exactly the same way you... -
Whats you gas mileage on your squarebody truck?
A brand new KLR? I kind of hope it gets better than 41mpg. My DR 650 gets anywhere from 46 to 51 on paved roads. Somewhat less off-road depending on all of the obvious factors.- Redfish

Sorry, this one I don't know the answer to. I can speak with some authority about a 1987 because mine is relatively low mileage and is all original. 1987 had a single wire sending unit right above the oil filter and a two wire switch below the distributor. I second @Ricko1966 on the tapered threads. The new sending unit will have a small amount of dry sealant painted on the threads. It's usually a dull red color. The sending unit has to ground through the engine, it is a single wire system. I did apply teflon tape to the threads on the...- Redfish

Regular right hand threads. I know for a fact because I have replaced the switch, the sending unit, and the knock sensor on my '87. The switch, located under the distributor is on a rather delicate brass piping assembly that can easily be broken off leaving the threaded part inside the motor...- Redfish

Sorry, wrong answers all around. Except for the knock sensor. It is indeed on the block on the passenger's side. The sending unit near the oil filter is for the oil pressure gauge. It will have a single wire attached. The switch under the distributor is a backup to the fuel pump relay...- Redfish

Since you saw The Truck in person you can tell it looks better in pics than In Real Life. From a few feet away it's not too bad. I like The Truck a lot and it was completely reliable the entire time, including the 3 hour trip there and then 3 hours back home. I hope to make some serious... -

Yes, I know it's a Ford but I have a soft spot for '78/'79 Fords. This one was clean and I LOVED the front bumper/winch setup.
