    I agree,, prolly a cracked head,, them ole smog truck heads are famous for it.. but he said it smokes,, and is .040 over,, new heads will wake it up and more than likely stop the smoking,, but the blow by??? the ring grove @ the top of the cylinders would give a better clue on condition...

    that is possible?,, but i really dont think so,, he said he ran them heads before with the same manifold... on my motor the block was decked and the heads shaved,, "thats how i got 11:1 with flat top pistons",, with a dry fit,, no gaskets all the angles were right,, but the space at the ends...

    id never use the end rubbers anyway,, they always leak....black silicone on the ends.....

    Cool!!:rocking: "High compression 425s and early 455s were painted red and the air clearners were an orange/red, definately a different shade from the engine. Low compression 425s had black air cleaners." That makes my 65 olds motor the 390 hp 425 for sure.....

    yea,, 1968 was the first year for the 455,, ive got one in a toronado and it is the funky blue,, i know where there is a 67 toronado and it has the 425 last year and it is red,,, as for the rest of them they did come in all the different colors,depending on the year, had to look it up in my olds...

    If my memory serves me right? Olds were red,up to the 425, then teal blue for the 455,, then went gold i think for the 350 and i dont know after that and i dont remember there year changes,, but the olds dudes I knew could find what they want just by looking for a yard motor by color,, now this...

    I have to add this.. Newer blocks where the water pump bolts to it have lil square pad on the block on the left side looking at it, ya can see it in the pic.. where the head meets the block...... the older blocks the pad is twice as wide where the block stamp is located if ya find one of...

    ive got old 2 and 4 bolt block that both have that oil pressure tap,, older blocks have them.........and most? newer block dont,, so ya cant tell by the oil tap what it is till ya flip it over and check..

    it would be ok to go that big,, but i wouldnt go over that.. after 75 GM started to get cheap with there blocks and tryed to reduce weight....... 99% of the good blocks are 74 and down........ but id have the block sonic tested before putting any money into it than to find out later it was...

    Lots of people dont like cast cranks? why i dont know,, i guess it not the KILLER SET UP,, but i like them and and have never broken one,, they flex a lil bit which i think its better and a steel crank dont flex and the resanents in the steel will cause them to crack and break. ive broken...

    (I've never had a problem taking a 3970010 cast block to .060.) those are the only blocks i use.. and if i remember right they come in 2 and 4 bolt mains,, 4 bolt i know for sure,, id have to go out and check some 2 bolts i have to be sure,, but i wont use a blue or black block.. if it runs...

    ya got lucky,, i never have,, the front bolts in the frame spring perch on the rear springs are usually the worst to get out....... the front will be a cake walk compared to the rear........:headbang::favorites13:

    it should have been sonic tested before going that big and never bore a blue or black block more than .30,, the ole 327 small or big journal will go .80 so will most of the early first production 350's...... but i would never go over .60 on an early 350........

    yea,, just hook a button to the glow plug solinoid and start it like a ford,, i only hold mine for 10 seconds max and then turn the key,, and she fires right up... but i left the controller disconnected till i got around to removing the wiring completely....

    sounds to me like its the glow plug controller and ive had nothing but problems with them.. mine did the same as you are sayin,, so went and bought a new one,, high dollar item too,, hooked it up,, thought everything was all good,, for about a month,, then the glow plug would light up while...
