    Bad Combo?

That's not bad for all you get. You do need the lifters, no ifs, ands, or buts. 12-300-4 is stock lift (one thing to recommend it, you won't be beating up the valve train), so stock springs are OK, but why wouldn't you replace them while you're in there on an older engine. Same with timing...

    Bad Combo?

Yeah, it'll leak maybe a shot glass or two of ATF. Not too bad. If you do go with the 12-300-4 and need that part, PM me your address.

    Bad Combo?

The governor is behind a little cap retained with a bail on the driver's side of the transmission. Unsnap the bail, pull off the cap, and the governor just pulls out. Here is what it looks like. You break off the staked end of one of the hinge pins, replace one weight with one size heavier...

    Bad Combo?

For the carb it has to be in the 6psi range. Regulator should do it. Oh, BTW, that should be Hooker 2452 headers above. 2453 is for 4WD trucks like mine. So, to have it all correct in one place: HEI distributor (with built-in stock advances, or you will be fiddling with an adjustable one...

    Bad Combo?

So, lessee. A summary so far: HEI distributor (with built-in stock advances, or you will be fiddling with an adjustable one forever), SMI custom-tuned Qjet, on an Edelbrock manifold (make sure it's one of the ones for the spread-bore carbs), keep the TH350 but knock the shift points down 500...

    Bad Combo?

Here's a thought. Instead of the stock 235/75R15 (29" diameter) truck tires, put a set of BFG Radial TAs in 235/60R15 (26" diameter). Lowers the truck an inch and a half. Also makes that 3.08:1 (with 29s) effectively a 3.44:1. I did this on my Safari in the mid 90s. That thing was a pig...

    Bad Combo?

Couple extra thoughts. Tires is a cheap gear change: tires are more expensive than a used axle, but there's less labor. And if you need tires anyway, it's free. Shorter side walls will roll under less in cornering. Changing the governor on a TH350 is a half hour job, assuming it takes you...

    Bad Combo?

If you want off-idle to 4500, you can go with the Comp 12-300-4 cam and get 422 lbft at 2500 rpm and have 300+ from 1000 on up. That's what I did, and I love it. No winding up over 4500, though. Changing the tranny governor by going one size heavier on one weight moves the shift points down...

    Bad Combo?

You don't need the O2 sensors if you are not running TBI. Yes, go long-tube headers. Hooker 2452. 2.25" is plenty, unless you go serious horsepower. Don't use an Edelbrock cam. Go with something like the Comp Cams 12-235-2. The Edelbrock carb is OK, but, if you are buying a new...

    Power lagging

The lifters are either hydraulic or solid lifters. I doubt you went with solid lifters.

Best stock head and Aftermarket cam combo

If it's been recently rebuilt, and the Vortec heads start adding up to more than you want to do for a hold-me-over-I'm-gonna-build-a-new-engine-up-later-anyway, you might just replace the cam. 12-300-4 is what I have, with same as you on everything else (carb, pipes, etc.). 275 hp, 422 lbft...

    Vacuum line from air cleaner

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Yeah, 13 at idle is good. The reason to run the idle that rich is that the mixture at such slow stack velocities doesn't get a lot of turbulence, so it can be uneven. If you try to set the idle mix at 14.7:1, some cylinders will occasionally see a mixture above 17:1, and you will have an...

I just check mine with the engine off. Yeah, somehow you are getting extra gas in there on power. What does your idle mixture read at?

    No filter, making a setup

Don't put a filter on the suction side of the pump. Just put a metal can in-line fuel filter in the supply to the carb. That's all you need.

Those are the numbers with 68/57 rods in .098 jets? Wow. That's really rich. I assume the 9" springs, right? You can tune idle, cruise circuit, power circuit, and secondaries (WOT). Not sure why you think you can only use AFR meter to tune cruise and WOT. Cruise at 10, should be 14.5...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

OK, so you're rich as hell in most modes, which is what I figured. Cruise circuit looks lean. The bog is in transition. Which rods are in it now? You want to get to 13 idle, 14.5 cruise, 13.5 power, and 12.5 secondaries. Idle is idle. Cruise is driving along at 30-40 mph without...

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Good! So now we're down to getting the mixture dialed. Your timing numbers are real good for now. Once the meter is in and you get the mixture dialed in, you can probably go another 4* on base timing, which will increase power across the band.

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Make sure the old one works, then put it in there. You can always replace it later once things are running right if you want to. I find a lot of the whiz-bang gizmotron aftermarket parts to be more of a PITA than a benefit.

    Crate engine swap advise please?

Yup. The aftermarket HEI distributors have adjustable vac advance cans so you can set it to be what you want, since there were so many variations in stock cans and they don't want to have to stock 97 different products. The problem with anything adjustable is that it must be adjusted. I would...
