    Timing help

To be safe, set it at 12. But your best performance and mileage will be at 16 or 17, as long as you don't get knocking. A more or less stock engine with decent regular gas shouldn't knock below 20.

    Timing help

The stock distributor curves work just fine for most engines. And an adjustable one can be a PITA to get even decently right if you don't have setup equipment to see what is really going on. A lot of people, based on what I see on the forums, end up worse off than if they just got a stock...

    Timing help

Here's what the stock setup will look like: I added a timing wheel behind my crankshaft pulley so it would have more marks and be easier to read:

    Timing help

Timing is trivial. It's basically just a strobe light triggered by the engine spark signal. The timing light is going to have two clips, sort of like jumper cable clips but smaller, one red and one black. Those clip on the battery. The other wire will either have an inductive pickup, which...

    Fuel pump leak

Why wouldn't you just use the stock fuel pump? If I'm reading the parts book right, GM #6471180 is listed for 1977 K-20 w/350, 400 w/4BC, w/AT. It's like 27 bucks at rockauto.com. You're not going to pull more fuel than a 400, right? BTW, pix on the net show this as having the return line...

Motor stalling when slowing to turn or stop

You can't run the Edelbrock carb (5-6 psi max) off an electric fuel pump (14 psi typical). You need a fuel pressure regulator. It goes right in line with your filter.

Motor stalling when slowing to turn or stop

Does it smell like it is rich? Do you have a fuel pressure regulator in the line to the carb? What is your timing set at? Is your vac advance hooked to ported or manifold vacuum?

    already want a bigger cam

All of the cams we are talking about are in the same ballpark, and are about all you can do (assuming 4bbl, dual-plane, and headers) without going to higher compression pistons or different heads. The simulated dyno curves hardly move at all.

    already want a bigger cam

I just ran those two cams on camquest with the 350 parameters. I'm not sure you'll notice much difference between the 12-206-2 and the 12-300-4. A little more torque in the very bottom, but maybe not enough to notice.

    Stumped

Yup, 1978 is last year for no pollution controls on C20, C30, K10, K20, K30. Make sure the timing is set right. If the distributor is not clamped tight, it will drag retarded and you will see this issue. BTDT. Timing is simple. Disconnect the vac advance line. You don't have to plug it...

    Gas leak help?!??!

If you get the return hoses mixed around, you can be drawing fuel from one tank and returning it to the other. This is the only way I know to get gas coming out at the rate you observe.

No power up hill or after 45 MPH

Also check your timing. If the distributor was not clamped down tight, it can drag retarded, and performance will be as you say. BTDT.

    need question answered

Ford had a floor-mounted switch like that on the F-series trucks in the mid-70s. My dad had one on his 75 F-250. Sounds like somebody used the Ford switch when they put in the other tank. The Ford switch isn't Chevy OEM, but it works.

    Lean MISFIRE! need help.???????

If by "longest throw" on the accelerator pump arm, you mean the hole in the end of the lever, that is actually the shortest "throw". The longest throw is on the inner hole. You might know that. Just making sure, because I have seen people get that backward.

    290hp 350 heads upgrade?

He could put shorter tires on it and get a lot more whoopee. Are those 33s or 35s or something? Going shorter is like changing the rear end ratio.

    Bad Combo?

You're right in that the Holley instructions say that. Funny they should get that wrong. The forums administrator on the Holley site clarifies that ported/timed vacuum is only for emissions-controlled engines here, however...

    Bad Combo?

Yep, no knock sensor on pre-ECM engines (through 1978). So if you are losing the ECM and going HEI, you can lose that. If water temp sensor is on the side of the head between #1 and #3 plugs, with a green wire attached, that feeds to the temp gauge, so you need that.

    Bad Combo?

For the record, 1500 rpm is not off-idle. The 12-300-4 cam has 300+ lbft of torque at 1000 rpm. I can pop the throttle at a stop -- no brake torquing, no dropping the transmission into drive, just take my foot off the brake and punch it -- and spin both BFG 31x10.5s with a G80 and 3.73:1...

    Bad Combo?

This is NOT correct. Ported vacuum -- dropping the advance at idle -- is pollution nonsense. It fires the spark too late for the thin mixture and dumps the burning charge through the exhaust valves, out the exhaust runners in the head, and into the manifold. The AIR pump then adds air to...

    Bad Combo?

The exhaust pulses do not alternate sides. The pulses from right and left sides go as LRRLRLLRLRRLRLL, so the left side exhaust is L--L-LL-L--L-LL-L and from the right, same thing. When that double pulse occurs, the H-pipe allows the overpressure to vent to the other side and vice versa...

    Bad Combo?

Valve timing -- No. You hook up the timing gears so the cam is zeroed. Ignition timing -- Not really. You can probably dial more base timing into the 12-300-4 than the stock cam. Firebane and I are running the 12-300-4 at 16* BTDC. But you can get the thing all running nice, then replace...

    Bad Combo?

But the intake and carb have to come back off to install the cam. Lots of extra work.
