    Ls swap or not?

If you're jumping down the Cummins rabbit hole, the elusive 3.9/4BT engine that appeared in bread trucks works quite well in a half-ton truck and can be adapted to many transmissions. You can also cram the heavier and more common 5.9/6BT but a half-ton truck's suspension might not like that...

    Ls swap or not?

The parts list can get long if you start with a bare engine. When I suggest a L31 swap, I assume people will start with a mostly complete engine/transmission unit or better yet, a wrecked/rusted GMT-400. When things like engine accessories and ECMs are missing, things get expensive quick.

    Ls swap or not?

If the truck runs good, leave it be. A 6.2 shorty is also kind of neat in that of itself . LS swaps are pretty popular fad (for a good reason) but they're not a drop-in affair like a later SBC would be. They're only economically viable if you do all the work yourself, buy the parts insanely...

AMC 258 HEI conversion timing issues.

The cam shaft and distributor gear are both brand new, I am also currently running a vacuum advance. I'll check the balancer pulley. Thanks for the suggestions @SirRobyn0

AMC 258 HEI conversion timing issues.

It's also worth noting that the subtle timing changes are not instant. They only seem to happen after extended driving sessions.

AMC 258 HEI conversion timing issues.

This is whatever unit JEGs sells (This engine came with a different HEI unit of unknown origin when I got it). The timing chain is new and the timing light does not show evidence of bouncing. Are the Davis units better quality?

AMC 258 HEI conversion timing issues.

On my '82 Jeep Scrambler, I just rebuilt the AMC 258, and installed a GM style HEI distributor and a Motorcraft 2100 carburetor. I seemed to have gotten the timing perfect initially, but sometimes it seems to change. The distributor seems tight and does not seem to be moving. What else could...

    Welcome from Poland!

Welcome. Be grateful you got one with a 350 and not a 305. I say that as someone who actually likes the 305. The 350 have has great potential and lots aftermarket support. It won't out-perform a modern LS, but it can certainly hold its own with the right build setup.

    Best seat options ?

GMT-800 seats are comfy and can be made to work. The bracketry can get tricky in a stock square, especially if you want full movement of the power adjust functions. Bennyt's idea would probably be more practical than hacking up GMT-800 seats.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

I run 4.56 in my '82 Scrambler and '93 F700. Both have 35 inch tires though.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

I have a 2015 K2500 HD 6.0 gas/6L90 with with 4.10 gears. I get around 12-13 mpg empty. If a modern engine and transmission does this bad, I'd hate to see what a small block connected to a 4 speed would do. With that said, I can tow some heavy loads with ease but the 6-8 mpg makes me sad. I got...

Should I go topless this summer?

Much of the Jeep crowd does this regularly. It's not particularly easy, but you only have to do it twice a year.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

To be fair, much of this thread is just us discussing advantages and disadvantages of ESC systems. Most of us here trust a 305 to tow as much as we'd trust any other 40 year old small block.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

I think SirRobyn0 had a decent theory about wear and manufacturing variations. Whether an ESC delete helps or hurts an engine likely depends on the particular engine in question. I'm looking hard at the modern MSD systems because of the programming aspect. The '80s/'90s ESC is built for a...

New owner of a Frankenstein K10

Welcome. Frankensquares and mix-masters are pretty abundant these days. Nearly 2 decades of square body production combined with countless junkyard driveline swap options makes these trucks extremely modular. My '85 C10 has an interior out of an '82 and 91 Suburban, and the driveline is from a...

I think Borgeson might make a replacement shaft, I'd have to double check.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

Didn't the early 305s from the '70s not have ESC in the first place? Was there really enough substantial differences to make an '80s 305 ESC dependent?

    Towing with a 305 V8?

My '84 K1500 has 305 that's been simplified like yours. It has an Edelbrock 1406, a sm465, and a 3.73 rear (and front). I have never recorded my mpgs, but the engine seems to work fine for it's age. I kind of want to toy a MSD spark control system, but I also kind of want to see what it can do...

78 scotts wants to die when leaving a stop

There's a lot that could cause that. Is your truck gas or diesel? If it's a gas truck, it is likely either going to be a carburetor or ignition timing related issue. It could be something as simple as a clogged fuel filter. Im speaking in very general terms. As for diesel, I have no idea.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

@SirRobyn0 Would you consider the modern MSD ignition systems a viable alternative to the old school ESC? I've thought about trying one on a 305 to see what would happen.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

My mistake, I saw the big solenoid and mistook as the ones on the computer q jets.

    Ford Trash Talk Thread lol

These are my thoughts exactly. I've only seen one spring malfunction and that was on a GMT-800. It shot off into the engine bay when I closed the hood. I wound it back up, and reinstalled it. It's never come off since. I'm not sure what made it jump off in the first place.

    Ford Trash Talk Thread lol

I've met some cheapskates that would carry a 2x4 in their bed and use it as a hood prop, rather than just spending $20 on new struts.

    Towing with a 305 V8?

@Velder, it appears you have a computer controlled q jet. If any of your sensors are dirty, or anything on that engine is out of adjustment, that thing will never run right. I suggest getting an older Q jet (or any other decent 4 barrel with a CFM low enough for a 305.) and and performing an ESC...
