Success!! new steering gear box is done along with the new stabilizer got the steering wheel straighten out ready for some road miles. Next thing will be new shocks and I think I may still need an alignment Now its time for the best first beer of the day!!
well I got the new gear box installed, new steering shaft is fitted but not tight yet. the new steering stabilizer didn't have any new mounting studs--Skyjacker brand. so Off to town tomorrow to see what I can come up with. thinking a 7/16" flange bolt and a bushing to snug up the fit around...
got the 87 gmc back in the shop for the new steering box, the new steering shaft showed up today so I will be able to get everything done in one round of shop time!! Perfect timing cause its supposed to start raining so I won't have water dripping on my face while under the truck!!
wee I'm not sure but I think Amazon may have screwed up. I was looking for a rag joint for the 87 gmc and stumbled across a borgeson steering shaft with the U-joints instead of the rag joint. Teliscopic and all. Borgeson has it for 246.00 plus tax and shipping, same thing on Amazon same part...
Well after being out helping my neighbors at 4am with down trees in the big storm, what a mess! I got the floor jack filled up and it works! Still have to test it out under the truck to make sure it holds. Trees are down all over the frozen boulder from the storm and now it's snowing this...
well now its time to cross my fingers and hope it works!! gotta wait till tomorrow till the sealant sets up and dries on the reservoir surface, then fill it up and see what happens!! Also got my new steering gear box today so after our big -supposed - wind storm tonight I can get going on that...
well I am gonna bite the bullet and order up a redhead steering box. input shaft seals are squirting oil pretty good so Not gonna mess with trying to seal it up since I am sure its probably the original box or a cheap replacement.
Nothing new in the tool dept.!! But I am rebuilding my old Napa 2 ton floor jack. took a little head scratching to get it apart- to get to the guts but It should be simple enough as long as I take a bunch pictures to help with the re- assembly
Took the 87 out to stretch her legs, kinda shakedown run. Ran great, a little wandering in the steering, not much but it got my attention. Ordered a new stabilizer, need to check the toe in. Wouldn't hurt to look into a new steering box
well if it ain;t one thing it's another!! went to check out the power windows before I put the door panels back on, NOTHING but a noise from the relays. WTH?? I had just charged the battery,or so the indicator light said was fully charged- my bad for not checking.I disconnected the battery...
finally got around to welding up the extra holes I drilled for the mirrors!! now to check out the power windows to make sure they work, lube them up with some silicone spray and get the door panels back on!
well I swear the squarebody gods have it out for me!! finally got the heated mirrors wired up and working!whew.being old and twisted up under the dash is not fun at all, but when ya finally get to the point of installing the toggle switch and tighten it up, only to have the threads on the nut...
who woulda thunk that putting the sun visors back in the truck could be such a PITA!!! I guess I could have asked the War Dept. to come lend me a hand......Nope that would have been a bad move!!LOL. this little project is winding down, waiting on a different switch for the mirror heat, new...
