Anyone have Bilstein shocks on their stock 4x4? Shock brand questions.

I had the classic yellow/blue Bilsteins on two different stock height trucks (mine and my dad's) and thought they were great. However when I bought another truck money was a bit tight- so I tried the KYB monoMAX shocks (stock height). Thought they rode as well as the Bilsteins and were cheaper.

    Axle Placement and Truck Height

It could just be the way the springs have settled so far. Does your truck have dual gas tanks? (Isn't a single tank only on the driver's side?) Do you drive with just you in the cab? Or have a passenger to "balance out" the weight? What brand springs were they? On your front spring shackles...

    Headers vs corvette manifolds

I think it was only the truck versions that "kicked back". And they were 2" and not 2.5". Corvette ones were straight down center dump. At least that was the info I found when I installed mine probably 7 years ago. There maybe some different aftermarket variants available now.

    Headers vs corvette manifolds

I have the 2.5" center dump reproductions. There was clearance issues on the driver's side with the motor mount. Passenger side was fine. But I have an automatic and not a manual. Not sure if there will be issues with that.

Which one to pick, TH350 or TH400 ?

A lot of 5th wheel hitches were just bolted on to the bed- at least in the 80s. My dad bought a 18' 5th wheel in 1988 and the RV place did just that. He has towed it ever since (34 years). It's been towed all over the western US and Canada. He even towed my 21' 5th wheel a few times. But mine...

    Headlight, driving lights.

I did get those yellow fog light covers for my LED offroad lights. I put them on the "pencil" beam ones. There is no upper cutoff, so it isn't ideal. But the yellow was much better to see with when I drove thru a snowstorm and can see better contrast with snow on the ground. Not as blinding.

    Finally ordering the lift

Tuff Country EZ rides are affordable. After that it is custom springs like Deavers or the ones from Offroad Design (Alcan spring). They use more leaves, but they are thinner and more flexible.

1987 Chevrolet V20 front leaf spring replacement

I haven't run a front sway bar for probably 10 years. Quite a few of the aftermarket leaf springs are fairly stiff- so there won't be much body roll in normal driving. However if you haul a big slide in camper then you'd probably want to keep it, or if you like driving high speeds on twisty...

1987 Chevrolet V20 front leaf spring replacement

The sway bar geometry isn't correct for a lifted truck. When the truck is stock the sway bar sits somewhat flat. When a truck is lifted you will notice that the sway bar angle is downward from the frame to the ubolt plates. This causes a bit of a binding issue- especially when hitting bumps...

1987 Chevrolet V20 front leaf spring replacement

^^^^ Yeah, what he said. My bolts were rusted solid to the steel sleeve inside the rubber bushings. Anytime I hammered it with everything I had the rubber would absorb a lot of the impact. Had to cut/chop the bolts to get them out of there.

    LED Round Headlight Conversion

Figured I'd update this thread as I just read an article about LED lighting for those who have the "old school" sealed beam headlights. Holley has come out with a headlight that looks period correct. No alien bug eye type look. And they fit in the original headlight buckets without modification...

Converted NP203 grinding sound in 2WD

I was just thinking maybe your chain broke. As after mine broke the shifter would rattle and make noise and there was noises from the transfer case. Then after the sound coming and going it "went away". Everything was nice and quiet. And then the day I went to go play in the snow I found that I...

Converted NP203 grinding sound in 2WD

Have you checked to see if it is actually going into 4 wheel drive when you move the lever? And not just 2 wheel drive?

Stock rim size for 1978 GMC K15 Stepside

They rally wheels were 15x8 for the 4 wheel drive 6 lug wheels. I looked at car-part.com and found a place in Belchertown MA that has what looks like 5 rally wheels for $35 each. Might even come with the center caps and trim rings. The pictures show them on the wheels anyway. They were at...

ORD vs. RUFFSTUFF cross over steering?

ORD has better drag link ends with their kit that just the generic 1 ton tie rod ends: "Our tie rod ends are manufactured specifically for us. Factory GM draglink ends have good angle capacity, but have long shanks that can cause clearance issues. Factory GM tie rod ends are nice and short...

What? No one is off-roading anymore?

Went out with the club yesterday and found some snow. About half the guys (new members) didn't really have their rigs built up. Open differentials, smaller tires. So didn't go as far as we normally go. Still had fun. Let them go in the deeper stuff and get stuck. Again and again. :Big Laugh...

    Aftermarket gear indicator fit

My '77 doesn't even have one of those. Guess the previous owner took it off and threw it away? Never really bothered me in the last 20 years or so. Then I started teaching my daughter to drive it last year.... "How do I know what gear I'm in?" Oh. Well, go down 3 "clicks".

Tire size for 12 inch lift on 1985 suburban?

I can understand the cost of a fully built dana 60 for the front anyway. $$$$ What you could do- is get some chromoly axle shafts. They are stronger than the stock shafts. Better metal and usually don't have the necked-down weak points. But once that is stronger then where is the next weak...

    Finally ordering the lift

It looks cool. Some say you need them when you run tires that are very wide or above something like a 37" tire. And maybe if you are doing high speed desert runs... I run 37s and have just a single stabilizer that is probably 10 years old. Don't have any issues.

    Headlight, driving lights.

Make sure you post if you ever try yellow light bulbs in them. When I was a kid we had a Wagoneer and it had yellow fog lights. But that was a long time ago. My dad said even if the fog was so thick it may not help you see, but others will be able to see you earlier. I haven't read on the truth...

Carb'ed vortec looking for info and opinions

No thermac. I have the corvette ram horn manifolds so didn't see how I could make a heat riser easily fit around those. Was running an open air filter which a lot of people hate as "it draws in hot air from around the engine!" For winter time I did experiment with completely blocking off the...

Carb'ed vortec looking for info and opinions

I just saw this thread. From all my reading and experience is: -vortec engines were a dry manifold from the factory. No air/fuel mixture is flowing thru the manifold. It is delivered right at the valves (multi-port injection). This provides the most power and eliminates cold weather issues...

    Finally ordering the lift

There are better riding lifts than RC, but the price might be cheaper on that brand. Definitely get a steering frame support. They crack with stock tires- so will be a matter of time with larger tires and more stress. There are better power steering pumps out there that will do more pressure and...
