    starter rebuilding - advice needed

Do you have access to a lathe? The most likely issue with slow cranking is bad commutator and/or brushes. I'd definitely want to turn the commutator for the new brushes. Otherwise I think you're on the right track. New solenoid and contact plate, bendix etc. Follow the manual and you should do okay.

    TH400 speedo driven gear issues

Changing the tooth count is going to change the ratio. Not the calibration. If you have the wrong gear your speed will be off by a percentage of MPH. Being 5 MPH off all the time means the speedometer head needs to be recalibrated. Usually they're correct if the needle is pointed at the little...

    Auxiliary trans oil cooler

It's not going to not work. It just won't be very effective. It's better than nothing, but if you're going to go to all the trouble why not put in a proper cooler and get all the benefits. I know. This one was free.

.010" backlash sounds a bit much. What is the spec?

    Deleting emissions,read this article.

I often wonder we'd be this bad off if it wasn't for the idiots rolling coal and posting it all over the innerneck.

    CNC machined emblems

If my GMC was ever going to see the road again I'd be all over those. Let me know if you're going to make any Silverado 20 ones.

    Venture a guess…

I was kicking around the idea of getting that convoluted plastic wire loom and painting yellow stripes on it. Then forming it into a pair of loops to attach to the headrests of the car. However, headrests are too low and you'd just end up with them on the back of your head.

Trailer Hitch - Factory Step Bumper

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that if you stay below the ratings on the step bumper and use that bolt-on with a receiver hitch that raises the hitch ball to the same height that it would be on the step bumper you won't have issues with the bumper rolling. The step was designed...

    Dash Differences?

Diesels had a two-light insert between the speedo and the fuel gauge. AFAIK they all had an amber "Wait" or "Glow Plugs" light on one side (depending on vintage) and a red "Water In Fuel" light on the other, which in trucks up to about 1986 would also be illuminated by excessive vacuum on the...

14 bolt FF hub seal orientation

The lip with the garter spring should face towards the oil in the hub. That's the one that does the oil containment. The other, unsprung lip is to prevent contaminants from getting into the seal itself. Looking at your picture I believe that side faces into the hub, away from the differential.

Awesome photo! Headlight aim may need some work.

    Front bump stops

Quad shocks and heavy duty suspension options (probably also went along with the diesel) got the extra stop on the front differential.

Thermostat not working, no coolant leaking from water pump, no pressure on upper & lower hoses

Invest in an inexpensive infrared thermometer and verify the gauge reading. If you were really running 260° there would be other signs. Temp gauges that have a faulty resistor will read crazy high for no reason.

    K20 vs. K30 Difference

Okay. I'm utterly lost here as to where this is going. It seems like people are confusing a 20HD with a 30 or don't understand that there were two versions of the 20.

    K20 vs. K30 Difference

The current pics look like a K20 chassis. I couldn't tell if it's an HD or not without measuring the frame thickness or the brakes. Maybe the spring pack count would tell you. Otherwise I have to go by the info he's giving us. If the VIN says it's a J engine it's an HD chassis. Assuming...

    K20 vs. K30 Difference

I think you misread my post. There are two K20s after 1980. Std and HD (C6P). Full float rears are not definitive of a C6P heavy duty package after '80. The 14 bolt SF became standard on 20s with 11" drums for the std and 13" on the HD. Unless the buyer optioned it the FF was in K30 territory at...

    K20 vs. K30 Difference

Probably. J engines were HD, which had to be over 8500 GVW for emissions. Look in the intake and see if there's an EGR valve. C engines had them, Js did not. All diesels has hydroboost brakes if that's what you mean by hydraulic.

    K20 vs. K30 Difference

Up to a point.... I own a 1985 3/4 ton and it was built with the C6P 8600 GVW package. So it was heavy duty emissions with a "J" code diesel engine with a 10" GM front and a 14 bolt semi floater rear with 13" drums and the heavier frame modulus that went with a heavy 3/4 ton truck as opposed to...

    Dielectric Grease

I've stopped using silicone dielectric grease on connections. I've had a few issues although I can't definitely say it was the grease that caused it. I'm also not happy with it's long-term properties for corrosion protection and lubrication. I've shifted to NoOxID which is specific to keeping...
