Bad alternator bearings
If you pull the belt, you should be able to feel if the alternator bearings are bad. They would feel rough when you spin the pulley by hand. As for defective parts, the only place I have ever gotten DOA parts from was an auto parts store. Now I buy all my parts on Amazon, and so far I have never...- Chevy 88

Defrost duct
You could always try expanding foam. It seals up large gaps really well, and you can easily trim it away as needed. You really need to follow the directions on the can though, or things can go bad. -

Inconsistent tapping from 400 sbc

Your main power wire goes strait from the battery to the starter, so you know that's not sorted. There is a wire that basically goes from the key to the starter (a few twists and turns aside), and when you try to start the engine, that wire becomes electrified. Drive up a mountain. Brake on the way down the mountain. Touch the rear brakes with your hand. Apply burn cream. If they are hot, they are working - at least to some "degree". 1st degree, 2nd degree, 3rd degree burn will tell you how well they are working. -

That's a thermally controlled electric fan switch. It activates your radiator cooling fan when the rad reaches a certain temp. That's what it looks like to me anyway. -
