    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Coming along- took the tape off this morning, did some detailing and cleaning. Then I chased all the threads.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Got the engine taped off, and put on the primer after heating with a propane burner and a wipe down with acetone. Then this morning, I finished off taping a couple other areas I missed, and commenced with applying the Motor Coater. I see one thin area I missed, but that will have to wait a week...

    Th350 shift kit help

Nick was pretty helpful when I was asking about this stuff. I installed a Transgo kit on mine and it shifts really nice but no neck snapping 1-2 shift. It was very doable with the transmission in the truck.

It’s sage advice- a guy said that too loose won’t kill it, but too tight will.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

I didn’t have much time to myself yesterday, but I did spend some time on the phone after I noticed that neither the pistons nor rings have a recommendation for ring gap. True to the nature of this, I called three places- the piston maker, ring maker, and last the shop that sold the assembly. I...

    Paint search

If you’re looking for medium blue that pops in the sun, the ‘81 Code 30 Nordic Blue (my stock color) is really nice. Not too dark in the shade, but with the little metallic in it, the sun lights it up a bit.

What have you done to your square lately??

Lately, just been running back and forth to machine shops and ordering parts and doo-dabs and what-nots as they come to mind for the engine build. In the background, a guy a hour south of me had befriended me after he bought my valve springs. Turns out he has an old square pro-street build from...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

@Craig Nedrow nice! My main clearances ended up being .0027. So that’s what I’m working with. On his advice, I did pick up a Melling shark tooth. It’s 10% above stock volume and comes with different springs to set the pressure bypass to what I want. Scott at the shop called me today, and...

    TBI/center bolt valve cover options

Found these on Fleabay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/186737828145 They look pretty nice and less squared off than the typical center bolts.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

On the last leg of the machine work. Got to North Seattle early today to pick up the block after the align hone and deliver back to my home machine shop in Bellingham before Friday hours ended (he closes doors early to work without interruptions). The bottom of the bores are just going to get a...

    Hey from Michigan

Welcome! I grew up in Atlas/Goodrich myself. My dad’s ‘74 is what got me back on this path. I was a little kid back then but I loved his square. This picture was taken at the corner of Perry and Gale Rd where we used to live.

It’ll be “spicy” until I shred the transmission with a “HeLl YeAh BrOThEr” and this fall you’ll see “Chuck’s Transmission build thread”. Lol

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

You’re third in a row to mention the 10552- the shop down by Seattle was the first, then last night the other guy that did my boring and decking texted me that would be his choice as well. Vizard talks all about modifying the 55 in his book to reduce the chatter, but it’s my impression that the...

    82 C10 EFI Conversion project

Ok cool. No worries, they’re only 30 bucks most places anyway - looks like I need the 12557. Nice build BTW!

    82 C10 EFI Conversion project

Which Melling unit did you go with? I was looking at the standard 55HV/155HV but the machine shop doing some of my work suggested a 10552 when I called them. In that family there are five different variations, just curious as to what you chose.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

The recommendation of the rotating assembly was for a Melling 55HV (high volume, 5/8” inlet). But everyone is telling me that high volume is a waste of time and money. I’m guessing that with them not knowing what clearances are, the manufacturer erred on the side of high volume, but if anyone...

I think that just dates him. Back in the day, we never went by area codes, just only seven digits. This is back in the days of rotary phones. You kids wouldn’t know about that, lol.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

On today’s episode of Chad’s excellent engine adventure, we visit Kirkland, WA, an hour and a half south of Bellingham. Here we will see the wild and exotic rare animal…the line honing machine. Lots of good stuff in the shop. Chuck, the owner, is a nice feller, though I got the impression that...
