Sure is a good looking truck that’s for sure! I had a VW from the 90s that did just that. I’d buff it, and it would look good for a short amount of time. Nothing I tried would keep the shine. Eventually I just ended up getting it painted- this was back when you could get a pretty good paint job...- ChuckN

VGG 1776 Clear vs Poppy’s Glossed Out Clear
I tried the VGG wipe on clear semi-gloss, it was a GD nightmare. In all the videos, it wipes on smooth, but even with cleaning liberally with wax and grease remover, it still streaked like crazy and looked like a$$. I ended up sanding it lightly then buffing in stages with different products...- ChuckN

That may be the case, and I understand what you’re saying. I can’t remember if I mentioned, but Howards wants the installed height at 1.75-1.76”. On the left, that’s above 1.95”, yet Howards says they’ve never heard of that. But the difference in the retainer styles tells the story, and the one...- ChuckN

Yeah, the Howards is the actual problem- it’s too tall so I won’t have enough spring pressure. I have some more stuff arriving today so we’ll see if after talking to them I’m on the right path.- ChuckN

Well, Howards was no help. The prior/original retainers fit fine and are very helpful in bringing the spring down to where it’s supposed to be. They gave me their blessing to use them since they have no other answer and they are within spec since the spring ID is the same. I just got off the...- ChuckN

Got the valve spring blues. You might notice that one thing here is not like the other. Howards retainer vs the existing comp cams retainer on the right. What a pain in the ass. Cam showed up this week. Awaiting the valve springs so I can check installed height. The valve springs that came with the heads (1.25”) didn’t have any locators, just steel shims. I’m not a big fan, but maybe that’s fine. I’m going to try to find some locators that fit the new springs if I can...- ChuckN

They have good attention to detail. I asked him what valve springs are matched, and he told me that it depends on valve spring height. So I bought a measuring tool and I’ll call them again with the measurement. Probably have to buy some shims to dial it in exactly. Cam is supposed to arrive today.- ChuckN

Yeah, the “Evolution “ line Comp may be improved but their High Energy line apparently are terrible. I’m probably just going to find the best deal on Johnson Hylift that I can and go with them. The lifters had been pretty galled on the side (same as the the bearings) from junk that had circulated through the oil, likely on startup from the prior “rebuild”. Yeah, I’m thinking that too. With 1.52 Ultra Pro magnum rockers will be right about .500 lift. Rather than getting rid of the 650 AVS and tuning a 750 Holley, I’m considering going Sniper 2.- ChuckN

Got a digital micrometer and some v-blocks to check lobe taper. I set up a jig to slide the cam back and forth on each lobe. My search says about .0015 taper is good, and these all checked out perfectly. Just dotting my I’s and crossing my T’s since there is constant talk about flat tappet quality.- ChuckN
