    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Finally got one cylinder head done. What a journey it’s been. It’s taken two different sets of spring locators, three different kinds of retainers (and keepers too). It’s become clear that between brands “+.050” or “-.050” locks (and also height of retainers) mean nothing because there’s no true...

VGG 1776 Clear vs Poppy’s Glossed Out Clear

Sure is a good looking truck that’s for sure! I had a VW from the 90s that did just that. I’d buff it, and it would look good for a short amount of time. Nothing I tried would keep the shine. Eventually I just ended up getting it painted- this was back when you could get a pretty good paint job...

VGG 1776 Clear vs Poppy’s Glossed Out Clear

I tried the VGG wipe on clear semi-gloss, it was a GD nightmare. In all the videos, it wipes on smooth, but even with cleaning liberally with wax and grease remover, it still streaked like crazy and looked like a$$. I ended up sanding it lightly then buffing in stages with different products...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Slow going here, just waiting on parts. Some delays due to bad weather in the south I’m told. I broke down the valve springs on both heads the last couple days. The valve springs from Brodix had no spring locators under them, just shims. In trying to have the most stability I can have, I...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

That may be the case, and I understand what you’re saying. I can’t remember if I mentioned, but Howards wants the installed height at 1.75-1.76”. On the left, that’s above 1.95”, yet Howards says they’ve never heard of that. But the difference in the retainer styles tells the story, and the one...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Yeah, the Howards is the actual problem- it’s too tall so I won’t have enough spring pressure. I have some more stuff arriving today so we’ll see if after talking to them I’m on the right path.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Spent a good part of the morning on the phone with Howards and then, Summit. Howards gave me their blessing to use the existing retainers, so that’s likely what I’ll do. I took the head with same springs installed with the the different locks and retainers to the machine shop, he said there’s...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Well, Howards was no help. The prior/original retainers fit fine and are very helpful in bringing the spring down to where it’s supposed to be. They gave me their blessing to use them since they have no other answer and they are within spec since the spring ID is the same. I just got off the...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Got the valve spring blues. You might notice that one thing here is not like the other. Howards retainer vs the existing comp cams retainer on the right. What a pain in the ass. Valve springs got delayed, but did show up today….with all of the locks free floating around in the box. Miraculously...

It does give me something to nerd out about though. When the block comes back- if it ever gets done- that’s when the slow, tedious process begins.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Cam showed up this week. Awaiting the valve springs so I can check installed height. The valve springs that came with the heads (1.25”) didn’t have any locators, just steel shims. I’m not a big fan, but maybe that’s fine. I’m going to try to find some locators that fit the new springs if I can...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

They have good attention to detail. I asked him what valve springs are matched, and he told me that it depends on valve spring height. So I bought a measuring tool and I’ll call them again with the measurement. Probably have to buy some shims to dial it in exactly. Cam is supposed to arrive today.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Called and had a great conversation with Howards Cams. It was unique because they don’t sell anything directly from their phone number so he gave me an honest answer. After much deliberation with whether I would need a small base circle cam, he recommended one since the potential was high. I was...

    BBC 489 build

Quick question Craig, is this a small base circle cam? There’s various information out there about this. That Bullet looks great but my build is much milder street. 510-520 lift with a 388. Build looks great!

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Yeah, the “Evolution “ line Comp may be improved but their High Energy line apparently are terrible. I’m probably just going to find the best deal on Johnson Hylift that I can and go with them. Seems the most failsafe option, although apparently for a “budget “ lifter the Howards get good...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Yeah, I hear ya and I appreciate you chiming in. The lifters had been pretty galled on the side (same as the the bearings) from junk that had circulated through the oil, likely on startup from the prior “rebuild”. All the flat tappet stuff I bought is already in the mail for refunds, and some of...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Back to the drawing board. Flat tappet stuff boxed up and sent back. More reports of flat tappet failures even with the DLC lifters. I can only afford to do this once and I’m gonna buy once/cry once and do a roller setup. Just need to figure out if I need a small base circle cam now, just have...

Yeah, I’m thinking that too. With 1.52 Ultra Pro magnum rockers will be right about .500 lift. Rather than getting rid of the 650 AVS and tuning a 750 Holley, I’m considering going Sniper 2.

Got a digital micrometer and some v-blocks to check lobe taper. I set up a jig to slide the cam back and forth on each lobe. My search says about .0015 taper is good, and these all checked out perfectly. Just dotting my I’s and crossing my T’s since there is constant talk about flat tappet quality.
