Exactly- the amount of stories you hear of that happening is scary.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Well, got the call from Steven at the shop yesterday. Good news is that the block is clearanced for the rotating assembly. Bad news is that the mains are a little out so will need to be align honed, and they’re not a big enough machine shop to have that machine. So tomorrow I get to load up the...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

He’s getting ready to check the crank in the block to see if it needs align honing. He’s doubtful it will because the old bearings were wearing evenly. Still, crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s.

Finishing hone completed. Next he’ll start clearancing the block for the rotating assembly. ARP hardware came in so I dropped it off and took a gander. For some motivation, I had a nice big mug made.

I Spy A Cool GM Truck

On the way home from work, this guy was trudging down the road. Loved it. Behind him was a Duramax bro with rubber band tires sticking a foot out of the wheel arches with all kinds of go to hell stickers on the back window. I thought, man, if you thought you were cool, you need to take a lesson...

    Dipstick for SBC

Hey fellers and fellettes - I was thinking after work last night that one part I need to add to my list is a new dipstick for the 388 build. I searched here but not definitive information. I’m pretty sure the machine shop ruined mine pounding the lower tube out of the block. There’s a lot of...

Well, so I bought a Toyota.

I recently sold off my valve springs spares to a guy south of me, we met halfway. He had an iteration of what you have, and of course I have a Toyota Sienna. He mentioned that is hard to argue with a Japanese vehicle as a DD. I tend to agree. Might have all the character of a toaster, but I...

    JW's 383 build

Nice work man! Keep it up. I like that cam choice. IMHO the two bolt wouldn’t bother me- it’s pretty common to run a two bolt main as long as you’re not going north of 500hp and spinning it past 6500. Just run some good hardware to keep it together. You’re doing better than I am, timeline...

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

Also, I had a good conversation with the machinist- I made the mistake of doing some math and realized how close in the end I would be to just buying a Blueprint crate 383. His response: “yours will be better than that in most ways. Maybe not in power, but you’ll know exactly what’s in it, and...

We’d Love Your Input — Help Us Improve the Site!

Any updates as far as the site errors? On average I check here every couple of days, but it’s been driving me absolutely batsh!t crazy. Either times-out/ no connection or I get weird “SSL Handshake error “ from cloudfare. I’ve cross checked with other websites and my internet service is fine-...

Off the boring machine. I’m going to stop by today and see if he’s begun honing. And, just because it’s April Fools Day…(damn autocorrect)

I've developed a whine in a just 10 miles of driving

Yep! I’m not familiar with your truck but you mentioned a transfer case- did you check that fluid? I’d just go through everything. I’d say that, if you’re comfortable with it, getting it off the ground and putting it in gear (letting the driveline spin) and putting a long screwdriver to the...

I've developed a whine in a just 10 miles of driving

That does seem to be a rather quick transition. I’ve had GM rear gears howl but it was a very slow wear transition. With the play in the spider gears, is anything more pronounced during turning than going in a straight line? As I understand it, that’s when the spider gears come into play. I’d...

New to Trucks- Want to Purchase a patina project

That’s a good point. If you’re wanting a clean slate for a vision that you have, and are going to do a complete tear down anyway and completely make it yours, I’d start out at whatever you can at the cheapest price point that fits your aesthetic. I was somewhere in the middle. I didn’t want a...

New to Trucks- Want to Purchase a patina project

This all day. I balked at the $20k market. So I bought a 7k, and I’ve put at least the 13k difference and much more into it, and don’t have as nice of a truck as the more expensive ones in the market were.

Engine is on the boring machine today. Figured I’d better get on picking up some thread chasers. So that gave me an excuse to order up the Cloyes timing chain as well to get the free shipping.

Got the heads finished up and in the box. Double checked everything- installed height, coil bind and seal to retainer clearance. Nice to have that done. The Howards/Morel lifters are here, so that’s one more major expense overcome. Last major parts to buy are the pushrods and rocker arms.

    Chuck’s engine build thread!

It’s been fun watching your build coming together on the ‘gram! I don’t know if those five spoke wheels I’ve seen in pictures are just a rendering or real, but they look awesome!
