Tomorrow at 9am, we get started. After a gnarly week of work, I got back out there to bolt on the motor mount brackets and do a test prime of the engine to make sure all rockers are getting oil. And they are. Good oil pressure. Let’s do this!- ChuckN

That’s pretty impressive. I feel like a complete Luddite with my 388 build. Honest question- what’s the chance of diagnosing a problem on the side of the road with all of the harness work, repinning, etc? Just curious. It’s all so custom that I was wondering about that. Likely typical 1.94/1.5 valves with 165cc intake runners. The “461X” head is floating around out there and people talk about their existence but it’s likely they just your garden variety. If they need a rebuild, you could probably spend the same amount of money on something like a Skip White...- ChuckN

I had camel hump heads on mine previously- my truck came with this kit installed and it works so good I’m going to continue to use it for now, even though I have accessory holes with the new heads...- ChuckN

Awesome! Best of luck to ya! Lots of internet keyboard warriors will tell you that a 383 has to breathe with big heads, but if you’re building a 4000rpm torque monster then there’s no real need.- ChuckN

Ok, so then what you could do is take a mechanics ruler across the deck with a feeler gauge with the piston at TDC and see how many thousandths it is below deck. Then, see if the pistons have a stamping on them (unless they are stock) and see if you can find out how many CCs the reliefs are...- ChuckN

Are you planning on pulling the heads and what-not for a refresh? You could get a better idea of what you have there. The good thing is that (I’m assuming) it’s a roller cam block. For a cam, I’ve had good a good experience with Howards- I called them up, told them my setup (rear gear...- ChuckN

You could get a rough estimate, but it won’t be accurate. The size of the valve reliefs , how far the pistons sit in the hole (was the block decked?) and how thick the head gaskets are plays a huge part and could make the ratio vary by a point.- ChuckN

On that topic, I’ll take a positive for today though- I was concerned that the poly locks wouldn’t clear the baffles in the M/T valve covers, but they do with about 2/10 inch to spare. As cool as they are, for whatever reason they thought to put the PCV/oil fills directly over the rockers...- ChuckN

Got the rocker arm stud length right, and the poly locks right. Was smooth sailing until I found that the roller tips aren’t lining up well on the valve stems, and the guide plates have little to no adjustment to them. So back to Summit for some AFR adjustable guide plates. And we wait again...- ChuckN

Good news! Pushrod length checked out perfectly! The Howards pieces are beautiful and well made. Bad news! The rocker arm stud is wrong yet again. The previous ones didn’t have enough shank on them, and the trunnions were sitting on the threads- no bueno. So the ones I got today are perfect...- ChuckN

Waiting for the parts to arrive today. Even after acid washing the intake, it looked like a$$, stained, etc. So I hit it with some acetone to clean it and then fogged it with some silver rally wheel paint I had lying around. Probably clear coat it later today.- ChuckN

hey Craig! The heads are their IK (iron killer) 200. 200cc runners, 64cc chamber. With the .036 head gaskets and the 12cc dished pistons, will come out to about 10.2:1. They are just a basic Chinesium head, but Eric W on YouTube said that they are of the highest quality he’s seen in the cheap...- ChuckN

Heads are on and torqued. I checked the pushrod length and determined 7.4”. And of course the rockers aren’t sitting on the shank like they’re supposed to, so I have to get yet another set of studs,lol.- ChuckN

Taught myself a trick when I was working on the cam end play. Even though the Canton cover is rated for a cam button and is advertised as strong enough, it still will flex a little when I had the micrometer in the lifter valley through to the inside of the upper sprocket and was hard to tell...- ChuckN
